Brief synopsis of Street Fighter Alpha - The Movie

The immensely popular STREET FIGHTER series, probably best known for its appearance on gaming consoles, has also become a first rate anime. Here, Ryu and Ken find themselves unhappily reunited as they meet up after the death of their master. Ryu's life is turned upside down even more when Shun, a boy claiming to be his long lost brother, presents himself. Doubtful, Ryu begins to believe the veracity of Shun's claim when he sees the boy fight in a martial arts competition. Unfortunately, the boy is soon kidnapped by the Shadowlaw organization forcing Ryu to undergo a painful journey just as his confidence is waning.

Rated - 5 starsLeave the film alone!

OK - I'm going to go ahead and put my neck out - this film is fantastic! It also should be considered as an alternative film to SF2 the anime - as far as I know, they're two different stories and capcom had a hand in this which should tell you something. It also brings on akuma and evil ryu which is worth the rental on its own! If you get this out with an open mind and not expecting a sequel (and ideally having player the SFA games - completely different storylines to the original), I genuinely think you will enjoy it and if you do, write it here! It seems to be getting really badly represented!

Rated - 1 starsI've seen very few movies that were quite this bad...

I'll lead with a quote from the description above: 'The immensely popular STREET FIGHTER series, probably best known for its appearance on gaming consoles, has also become a first rate anime'

However, this film is NOT the first rate anime. This is a poorly animated, badly scripted complete waste of time. Consider it a 90 minute advert for the game, as then you won't be quite as disappointed. About the only entertainment you'll get from this is trying to spot all the cameos by other characters from the game.

Compared to the original Street Fighter 2 : Animated Movie, this film is GOD AWFUL. To show you how bad it is, I would say the complete stinkfest starring John-Claude Van-Damme and Kylie is actually a 4 star film by comparison.

Rated - 3 starsOk, flawed but not as bad as everybody says

Rob V from Newcastle, England , 05/11/2005

Ok, so it's not perfect and there is little to no continuity from the the original movie- but suspend your expectations resulting from the original and just enjoy it as a film in its own right. If you do that then you get an alright manga film- certainly ryu's struggle against the dark hado, and the inclusion of Akuma (though i'd have preferred him to have played a greater part in the story) make this film worth watching, the story isn't complex and the dialogue, in places, not great- but then the same can be said of plenty of mangas, it's still an enjoyable action movie. The animation lets it down slightly, but maybe that's just because of comparisons with the original. Definately worth a try if you've exhausted all the truly great mangas (Ninja Scroll, Akira etc.)
