Brief synopsis of Reconstruction

Reconstruction turns romantic drama inside out, laying bare the emotions and psychology of passion in an explosion of images. Protagonist, Alex, a photographer, and beautiful Aimee, meet by chance and fall in love in the course of one intense day in Copenhagen. After just one night together, both must return to their partners and domestic lives, but as Alex lifts his key to the door of his flat, he finds it no longer there. And so begins the sinking realization that he has unwittingly crossed a spatio-temporal line....

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Danish director Christoffer Boe explores the relationship between cinema and literature in this teasingly film noir-like mystery that recalls some of David Lynch's more unusual movies. Tempted into a fling with novelist Krister Henriksson's glamorous wife, photographer Nikolaj Lie Kaas awakes in a seemingly alternative universe, where neither friends nor family know him and he suspects he's being manipulated by a higher force. Playing fast and loose with the rules of storytelling, Boe delights in misleading the viewer, a conceit made easier by the fact that both the women in Kaas's life are played by the bewitching Maria Bonnevie. Tricksy, calculated and occasionally self-conscious, this is definitely worth the experience.

Rated - 5 starsANOTHER DANISH MASTERPIECE

Maria Dumas from London , 29/09/2005

The director of Reconstruction, Christoffer Boe won the prestigious Camera D'or prize in Cannes for this film and it is no surprise why. Reconstruction is an amazingly original story and a dream of a love story with a twist - and yet it is so much more than words can describe. In the role as Axel is Nikolaj Lie Kaas, one of Denmark's best young actors, and in the double role as Simone/Aimee is the magical actress Maria Bonnevie. And although she is Swedish/Norwegian the main language in this film is Danish - and not Swedish as it says in the description here on the page. Keep an eye out for great actor-performances, brilliant and intelligent dialogue and the most incredible camera shots - oh, and keep an eye out for Boe's new film Allegro starring Ulrich Thomsen (Brothers, the Celebration) and supermodel Helena Christensen.

Don't miss this film!

Rated - 1 starsWhat was that all about?

A customer from Surrey , 23/06/2006

Um. . . . what a weird, confusing film!

I'm not dim and I do like foreign films, I can even cope with non-linear narratives such as Memento and my fave film is Betty Blue but THIS failed to reach the spot.

It is trying to be clever, but actually doesn't tell its story very well. You are waiting for an explanation or a twist and all you get is more confusion.

It is not credible or believable, the characters are one dimensional and it left me cold.

Do yourself a favour and don't bother with this. If you want a good Danish film get Open Hearts or The Idiots! Both entertaining films in different ways.

after reading some of the other reviews of this film I wasn't sure whether to rent it bit I am so glad I did

Its a beautiful, original, dark, intense film noir, and it is all the better for not following any rules of story telling

even the narrative at the beginning tells you 'it's a film, a construction, but it still hurts'

can't recommend it enough if you like character based, original films

rent it
