A zany comedy story of an off-the-wall journalist who tries to fulfil his writing deadlines whilst battling against the effects of powerful self-administered drugs.

Through the eyes of the pioneer of “gonzo journalism”, Hunter S Thompson, we see various facets of US political life in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The under-rated Bill Murray is Thompson while Peter Boyle plays his outrageous legal acquaintance, Lazlo. This movie was “based on the twisted legend of Hunter S Thompson” according to its title sequence — though its essential sources are Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. It was panned on release in the US but it's actually an interesting and savage little piece — accompanied by tracks from Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and The Temptations — which deserved better. A perfect companion piece to Terry Gilliam's gonzo-inspired oddity Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which starred Johnny Depp as the drug-fuelled Doctor.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Frenetic, rarely funny comedy, based on the work of self-styled 'gonzo journalist' Hunter S. Thompson.

If your a fan of Bill Murray's work then rent this anyway. If your a fan of 'Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas' then you'll love this movie too. Well worth the watch...

'Where the Buffalo Roam' is a softer edged, much less trippy, 'Fear and Loathing'.... but it isn't the Gilliam film so don't rent it and then be disappointed that it doesn't blow your mind! This is an out of focus look at the life and work of the late Hunter S Thompson, the founder of Gonzo journalist and general wreckhead. Bill Murray is great and if you are after a diluted look at one of the 20th century's greatest characters - then you will love it.

Rated - 2 starsWatch it for Murray

By any reasonable standard, this is a pretty poor film: the story is non-existent, the direction is lousy, and yet... Bill 'Groundhog Day, Ghostbustin'-ass' Murray. What can you say? He made Lost In Translation watchable, and he does a similar job here - his impression of the high priest of Gonzo, Hunter S Thompson, is hilarious and true-to-life (though he's a little more audible than the good doctor). The re-enactment of scenes from Oscar Zeta Acosta's 'Revolt of the cockroach people', as Thompson's lawyer buddy tries to get a bunch of kids of a pot-smoking charge, is pretty cool, and suggests that a film treatment of Acosta's books would be worth seeing.

So, worth a watch, but in comparison to Gilliam's 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', this is kinda lame.

....but it's always worked for me

Great film. If your a fan of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas you gotta check this out. I was totally surprised by the quality of Bill Murray's performance in this film as the good Doctor. Expect plenty of craziness and drug fuelled mayhem, along with some great lines.
