The film that hastened director Neil Jordan's departure from Hollywood actually isn't that bad, just a disappointing waste of an impressive array of talent. The script, loosely based on the Humphrey Bogart/Peter Ustinov film of the 1950s, is by David Mamet, and the cast includes Robert De Niro, Sean Penn and Demi Moore. Yet the result is a leaden, only fitfully funny farce in which escaped cons De Niro (over the top) and Penn pose as priests as they attempt to cross the border to Canada. Moore's role is mainly decorative and the best performances come from a wily support cast, which includes Bruno Kirby, Wallace Shawn and, most notably, Ray McAnally in his last film role as the evil prison warden.

Delightful film where the three convicts help out a family in trouble in their own inimitable way. Set on Devil's Island (penal colony) at Christmas time. I really enjoyed this feel-good film. This is Bogart & Ustinov in relaxed holiday mood. Aldo Ray's presence is curious - a hard man in gangster films, with no real light comedy experience at the time of this film. As a result, Ustinov & Bogart act him off the screen. Actually, this film comes over very much as a mannered stage play (my wife didn't like it at all), with the 2 principals meticulously & rather obviously observing all the stage conventions (be still when the other is speaking, don't obscure the speaker etc)! Not terribly taxing, but it made me smile & I enjoyed seeing it again.
