Brief synopsis of Flawless

Walter Koontz (De Niro) - once a hero cop, now a security guard - lives in a rundown Hell's kitchen tenement. One fateful night, after hearing the cries of a neighbour in trouble, his attempt to help turns into a nightmare when he suffers a stroke. Paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak clearly, Koontz, on the advice of his doctor, seeks voice lessons. But with winter holding him hostage to his apartment, he has no choice but to seek help from a musically inclined neighbour whom he vehemently dislikes: outspoken drag queen Rusty (Hoffman)...

Critics Reviews

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Utterly schematic, hopelessly old-fashioned and totally bogus, director Joel Schumacher's highly personal comedy drama nevertheless delivers some camp laughs along its uneven, shamelessly manipulative route. After suffering a stroke, homophobic security guard Robert De Niro is rehabilitated by street-smart drag queen Philip Seymour Hoffman. A meaningful relationship ensues as the macho patient learns the error of his bigoted ways. Deflating the simplistic morality fable is a vicious subplot involving stolen mob money that Hoffman may have hidden to pay for a sex-change operation. The two leads strive for emotional impact, but the superficial screenplay continually lets them down by substituting bitchy one-liners for heartfelt truths.

Entertainment Weekly

"...Schumacher does his most jovial and humane work in years....As long as Hoffman and De Niro are acting out, it's a light-fingered charmer..." -- Rating: B+

This film has everything made me laugh out loud in some scenes and cry in others, De Niro and Hoffman are superb and the rest of the cast are fantastic.

A really great story.

A touching story of a retired policeman (DeNiro) left partially paralysed after trying to intervene a crime in his building. In order to regain his speech, he takes singing lessons with the drag-queen neighbour. Philip Seymour Hoffman does a fantastic job as the 'female impersonator'. Some great punch-lines and hilarious dialogues, this is a story about accepting and tolerance. Slow-paced entertainment with a depth.

One of the best movies I have seen for a long time. DeNiro is fantastic. A light hearted movie, to relax and enjoy. Not for the homophobic.

Excellent performance by Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Rusty. Believable performance as ever by Deniro. Only rated 4 because Deniro took the slurred speech to the max.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a genius. One of the most underrated actors on the screen today and his performance in this movie deserves a bagful of oscars.
