Brief synopsis of There's Only One Jimmy Grimble

This football fairy tale follows the life of young Jimmy Grimble (Lewis McKenzie), a shy Manchester school boy. When an old woman (Jane Lapotaire) rescues Jimmy from being roughed up by bullies, she gives him a pair of boots that belonged to a City legend. Soon Jimmy's on his way to becoming a top player. The charming film also features Robert Carlyle, Ray Winstone, and Gina McKee.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In this feel-good fantasy football yarn, film first-timer Lewis McKenzie plays Manchester teen Jimmy, a budding George Best, but only in the privacy of practice. Play him in a game and he's tackled by lack of confidence. Then an old crone gifts him a pair of “magic” football boots and Jimmy is soon inspiring his team to the finals of the inter-school championships. With big guns Robert Carlyle (as his sports teacher) and Ray Winstone (as an ardent suitor in a subplot involving Jimmy's single mum), this has moments that are corny, clunky and crass, but it's still hard to dislike.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Likeable, light-hearted tale of a underdog learning to cope with life's little misfortunes, but looking somewhat undernourished on the big screen.

Time Out

It's hard being a small, shy, sensitive, lone Mancunian with unrealised dreams of footballing glory, and though Jimmy... Read more on www.timeout.com

Excellent film suitable for all the family. Even if you don't like football there's something in this film for you. Nice understated performances form Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle. Also proves that you can make a good British film without resorting to constant bad language and drug taking.

Superb feel-good family film, with ultra cool soundtrack featuring Ian Mcculloch, Stone Roses etc ..

Basically, a bullied Man City fan in an ocean of loser Man Utd bullies (typical Man utd eh!) redeems himself with the aid of 'Magic boots' from a City player from yesteryear ..

Lewis Mckenzie as Jimmy is excellent; as is the always superb Robert Carlyle.

I found Jane Lapotaire's old crone ridiculously over the top however, and Ray Winstone's Manc accent sounds like Bernard Manning after 60 Benson & Hedges!

Also watch out for a young, chubby-faced Samia ghadie from Corrie, playing a weirdo.

A brilliant film for all the family and especially for a Man City Fan. With the line at the end "What's better than Man Utd where Jimmy replies Manchester City - Classic

An excellent film to watch, made my kids realise you don't always need a new pair of boots to score goals!!! Nice to see old fashion films, kids loved it! Good story and excellent actors.

As a non-football fan I was surprised with Jimmy Grimble. It had themes that kept me interested as an adult, as well as being able to entertain a young group.

Well worth watching if you want to get gripped and drawn into a well-written film about hopes and dreams for a youngster living in the city.

Rated - 5 starsA real treat!

This is a brilliant British film. It's the football version of Billy Eliott and they are both as good as each other. Robert Carlyle delivers a great performance as Jimmy's football coach. Some events make you want to smile, others make you want to smack your hand to your face and furiously shout. There's hardly any bad language which as another reviewer said shows that you don't need bad language to make a great british film. I don't even like football and I loved this.
