RelatedCritics ReviewsDirector Bertrand Blier can never be accused of shying away from controversy. He was accused of sexism in many quarters for this tale of a successful car dealer who abandons his statuesque wife for a plain, older secretary. Yet, thanks to the wholehearted performances of Gérard Depardieu and Josiane Balasko, this is a genuinely touching love story. Blier can't resist mocking the sexual repression and social hypocrisy of the middle classes in a manner that recalls the later satires of Luis Buñuel. His film is a touch short of stamina, but the blend of earthy drama and surrealist fantasy is thrilling.
