Rated - 4 starsExcellent but too short

Carol Haynes from Yorkshire, UK , 25/06/2007

Excellent performance from Alfred Brendel (and not too much camera mucking about) but why is it so short? Seems to me to be marketing hype for people who buy this as 2 discs look better value - as it is it could all easily be fitted onto a single disc - or even better some archived recordings of Brendel playing would make this a more fitting tribute.

Rated - 5 starsBrendel - A masterly musician.

George Figes from Stevenage, Hertfordshire. , 24/11/2005

Most professional musicians retire into a shell when one enquires into their private life. Brendel is unique in that from an unusual background he has grown into an internationally acclaimed master of the piano. His sound knowledge of the score and seeking the mind of the composer results in music that deserves the epithet 'great'. This portrait of the private man displays his charm and humour, amply illustrated with brilliantly performed piano vignettes. Thoroughly recommended.

I watched with awe. This technical master is intelligent and sensitive. The DVD is on my Birthday list...a must have item.

I thoroughly enjoyed this portrait/documentary.

Just the right balance of playing and interview - Brendel came over as a most interesting European , self-effacing but obviously genius material from an early age.

Listening to him play , and watching him will change how I perceive piano-playing in the future - his interpretation seems to come from deep within him - meticulously worked out then flowing naturally from his fingers .

A very well made film.
