Brief synopsis of Crying Freeman

CRYING FREEMAN is a fast-paced martial arts film based on the Japanese comic book of the same name. Yo Hinomura (Mark Dacascos), a deadly assassin with a conscience, sparks a vicious gang war--and a romance--by killing a Yakuza leader. Intense action follows. This is the first collaboration between Dacascos and French director Christophe Gans; the second is THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF.

Hong Kong-style action meets James Bond in this beautifully crafted adaptation of the cult Japanese comic strip. Enigmatic Mark Dacascos plays the latest in a long line of human killing machines programmed by the Sons of the Dragon Society to respond to hypnotic signals. Because he sheds a tear after each contract killing, he earns the nickname “Crying Freeman”. How he keeps his identity a secret fuels a cranked-up plot packed with inventive explosions, balletic gunplay, hyperkinetic stunts and forbidden love. This is a visually arresting and fresh slant on the usual comic-book capers.

Very good live action version and for a change this keeps a lot of story and visuals from the manga/anime.

Lots of action, good SFX. Mark Dacascos is Freeman and look out for him in Drive and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

A mildly diverting Hong Kong action film in the gloriously trashy tradition. This film takes itself far more seriously than any viewer ever could: its great if you like big explosions and slo-mo shoot-outs, interspersed with campy acting and some melodramatic narration from the somewhat faceless heroine. So it's great, then, if somewhat forgettable.

Rated - 3 starsWatchable But Lacking.

This actioner based on a Japanese comic book about a Yakuza Killer who cries when he carries out his hits is filled with action set pieces, but lacks that little something. In the hands of an Asian director I'm sure this would have sizzled a bit more.

Christophe Gans does a fair job, and in all fairness he went on to handle action far better in Brotherhood Of The Wolf. Mark Dacascos, who re-teamed with Gans for the earlier mentioned Brotherhood has also been better. Just catch Drive for proof of this.

Watchable, but nothing special. It is a shame the DVD release is pan and scan and not a widescreen presentation. Pan and scan does nothing for action films, especially one with Martial Arts content. Was this a straight to video release or did it get cinema showings? I can't remember.

The lead actor is fantastic looking, well 90's, but the fight scenes I loved. If you love dated ganster films, which i do rent it.

One or two good action scenes do not make a good film. This film has potential with some well put together fight scenes. Alas, it is bogged down by too much mystical mumbo jumbo and it increasingly becomes hard to follow and boring.
