Rated - 4 starsWOLF CREEK

Marvel from Surrey , 19/09/2005

A bit of a slow burner, but worth the wait. The story revolves around three backpackers, who are travelling across Australia. They decide to visit a meteor crater, where their car fails to start leaving them stranded in the middle of the Australian outback. There is some great acting, and the tension is brilliantly built up with the eerie atmosphere. This film has been likened to the Blair Witch Project, and I can see the connection with the genuine fright the characters demonstrate. I also feel that the way the story comes together, has a bit of 'My Little Eye' about it. The film is unclear as to whether the events are true, making this film even more scary. A must for horror fans! GO WATCH THIS FILM!!!

Rated - 4 stars"Head-On-A-Stick!" - Sick.

drunkenmaster from Merthyr Tydfil, , 17/01/2006

Nasty and unsettling, brutal and gut-wrenching, this is a modern horror tale that truly shocks. The dubious tag of based on a true story is used but this is actually based on an amalgamation of several Australian true accounts of murder in the Outback. The deliberate slow build up to introduce the characters just makes the torture and murder scenes more powerful when they finally arrive. This is no Hollywood film. There are no throwaway puns in this. Played dead straight this is a most convincing horror tale of how twisted someone can be when there is no law and order to keep them in check.

The basic plot has three backpackers finding terror at the hands of a psychopath at the end of an Outback excursion. The young cast are quite able, but it is veteran actor John Jarritt who really shines in a role that he will be remembered for. The “head-on-a-stick” scene is genuinely disturbing and hard to watch with some horrific sound effects. This is a movie that is not for the squeamish. Reminiscent to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in its cold hearted brutality, this was written, produced and directed with confidence by first timer Greg McLean. It will be interesting to see what he does next.

Difficult to watch, but impossible not to be impressed with, this is either going to be a viewers’ guilty pleasure, or an instant turn off. Me, well I watched it twice.

Rated - 3 starsvery...very...very...scary....

ATfilmcritic from London , 26/09/2005

Most horror movies start with a bang and end with a whimper (Jeepers Creepers, 28 Days Later, even Psycho). This bloodcurdling backpackers’ nightmare, set in the Australian outback, is the opposite. It starts off a laid-back road movie, all horny 20 year olds and drunken parties. But about 45 minutes in, the rug is pulled out from under you, and Wolf Creek enters a second act that’s not so much nerve-shredding as nerve-obliterating. Atmospheric, well-acted, this is a cult classic in the making, full of unforgettable images and graphic killings, as well as one of the most charismatic psychopaths since Freddy Krueger. If you like scary movies, put this at the top of your list.
