Brief synopsis of Bewitched

Director Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail) breathes new life into the classic television show BEWITCHED in this romantic comedy of the same name. Movie star Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) had it all until he made a few bad films and his wife left him. Now, the washed up star is slated to play Darrin in a remake of the 1960s sitcom about a mortal man who unknowingly marries a beautiful, good-hearted witch. Determined to resuscitate his career, Jack and his agent, Richie (Jason Schwartzman), demand that an unknown be cast as the witch, Samantha, in order to maximise his screen time and star power. After an exhaustive search for the right actress and the perfect nose wiggle Jack spots Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman) in a book store and is convinced that she can be the new Samantha. And right he is; Isabel really is a witch who is determined to try life and hopefully love without magic, much to the chagrin of her debonair warlock father, Nigel (Michael Caine). Immediately drawn to Jack, Isabel follows her heart and takes the role only to discover that he has no plan to share the spotlight with her, and can also be a big jerk. Can Isabel refrain from using magic to put Jack in his place and win his love? And how will Jack react when he learns Isabel's secret? More interesting than a standard remake, the screenplay by Ephron and her sister Delia nicely weaves in the characters and basic plot of the original television series while developing a completely new story and characters. Shirley MacLaine stars as a legendary actress who plays Samantha's mother, Endora, in the new television show and just may have a few secrets of her own. Steve Carell has an amusing turn as Uncle Arthur, a character originally played by comedian Paul Lynde.

Rated - 4 starsnot as bad as they're making out

Gromit Gromit from Canterbury , 23/04/2006

I read the reviews here before I watched the movie and was thoroughly expecting a turnip...however, I wanted to know just how bad a film could be with such an excellent cast and interesting premise. The answer is - not bad at all. In fact, its surprisingly good. I think that the reviewers here are probably biased by the original series, or thinking too hard about the effect that magic could have on the world (?!), whereas I've only seen a couple of the original series and its been years since that happened. The cast of this film are perfect, Nicole Kidman shines as the lead and Will Ferrell is excellent as usual. My only complaint with the film is that the characters played by Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine aren't concentrated on enough - so at the end it leaves you with quite a few unanswered questions as to what happened with them (I put it down to over-zealous editing). But apart from that, the script is light-hearted, funny and even touching in places. This is a gentle no-brainer romantic comedy which will suit most for a quiet saturday night in with your partner. However, if you're looking for shakespeare or a film with a plausible plot I would suggest you give it a miss!

Rated - 2 starsVery Disapointing

David Gray from Clackmannanshire, Scotland , 02/09/2005

Since the film was first announced, I was eagerly looking forward to this film, being a great fan of the original series. The announcement of Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman as the leads made it all the more appealing. However, as more details about the plot came to light, my excitement started to wane somewhat.

To it's credit Bewitched is something of a paradigm shift away from the typical little to big screen transition. Those lovable little twits that brought us 'You've Got Mail' have delivered a film not about a witch named Samantha and her idiotic husband Darren, but something much more interesting, a film about a remake of a TV show about a witch named Samantha.

Now the really hilarious thing about this is that the actress playing Samantha is really a witch who wiggles her nose and has an extended family that's almost identical to the family on the original TV show, Huzza!!!! You may wonder how this strange coincidence could be handled gracefully. My answer is, I don't know, and by the way that's the directors answer too.

The only real saving grace of this film is Will Ferrell who uses his large rle to its fullest bringing the crazyness factor up to 10 as he tries to upstage 'Samantha'. Michael Caine also delivers a memeorable role as 'Samanthas' father and Steve Carrell gives a hilarious, if somewhat forced in, cameo as Uncle Arthur.

Another strange thing is that the witch seems to be free to rewind time whenever she messes things up. I've always wondered when I've seen this in movies, what happens to the other 6 billion people, wouldn't there be some sort of butterfly effect? Makes you think she's sort of a selfish bitch. I wish I had that power so I could get back the 100 minutes I wasted on this garbage.

Fans of the original Bewitched, be prepared to have all the things that made the original so great ripped away for yet another commercial remake of a classic show.

I could watch the original episodes of bewitched over and over but this film - once is enough, nicole kidman is quite good but not half as good as the late elizabeth montgomery and will who plays the part of darren is terrible, i never want to see him try to act in another film again!, a waste of a remake.

Rated - 2 starsUtter Disappointment

A customer from Bristol, England , 19/03/2006

Having watched the original TV series, I was hoping for an 'improved' version. I was therefore thoroughly let down by this movie, which just didn't come up to par with any of the director's (Nora Ephron) other comedies. Her version provides a new setting by allowing a real witch, Isabel Bigelow (played by Nicole Kidman) to play the part of the naive and innocent wannabe actress, who plays a witch (Samantha) on the remake of the TV series. Confused? Will Ferrell plays Jack Wyatt, a has been actor who is now attempting to regain his star status after several movie bombs by playing the role of Darrin, Samantha's TV husband.

I couldn't detect any chemistry between Nicole and Will. In my opinion, Nicole who is good dramatic actress, lacks comic timing. More importantly, her character does not really seem to grow beyond the naivete, and as a result, can just come across as dim and simple at times. Even Shirley Maclaine, who plays her TV witch mother Endora, is completely under utilised in this movie. The one bright spark is perhaps Michael Caine, who plays Isabel's warlock father.

The love that was meant to blossom between Isabel and Jack is not convincing and lacks depth. Why does she love a man who is selfish and only seems intent on using her to further his fading career? That was never explained properly.

I watched the entire movie only to wait for a chance to laugh but this never happened. This is a move that has been held back by a unfunny script and unconvincing characters.
