The Criminal on DVD (2000)
RelatedCritics ReviewsComedian Eddie Izzard plays it (relatively) straight as a forensics expert in this contemporary film noir from first-time director Julian Simpson. The opening sequence, in which musician Steven Mackintosh (bearing the Kafkaesque name J) is lured into a one-night stand with Natasha Little, is quite mesmerising. Yet, from the moment Mackintosh wakes to find himself up to his neck in a conspiracy, the action follows an all-too-familiar route to its convoluted conclusion. Simpson's handling of the plot doesn't quite convince, but he's well served by his cast: bantering cops Bernard Hill and Holly Aird provide some of the film's best moments as they pursue their prime suspect, while Mackintosh admirably conveys the everyman's terror at finding his head above the parapet.
