Brief synopsis of The Criminal

J leads an uninteresting life so can't believe his luck when one night after drinking in a bar he finds himself with a mysterious blonde drinking vodka at two in the morning back at his place. Little does he realise that his good fortune is about to lead him into a world of murder, extortion and corruption.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Comedian Eddie Izzard plays it (relatively) straight as a forensics expert in this contemporary film noir from first-time director Julian Simpson. The opening sequence, in which musician Steven Mackintosh (bearing the Kafkaesque name J) is lured into a one-night stand with Natasha Little, is quite mesmerising. Yet, from the moment Mackintosh wakes to find himself up to his neck in a conspiracy, the action follows an all-too-familiar route to its convoluted conclusion. Simpson's handling of the plot doesn't quite convince, but he's well served by his cast: bantering cops Bernard Hill and Holly Aird provide some of the film's best moments as they pursue their prime suspect, while Mackintosh admirably conveys the everyman's terror at finding his head above the parapet.

There are some great performances in this gritty black comedy but the partnership between Bernard Hill and Holly Aird is great to watch. Fast paced and a completely unexpected ending. Class!

The ensemble cast for this was excellent. I rented it mainly because I'm a massive Izzard fan, but there were loads of familiar faces, and Steven Mackintosh was as reliable as ever. I really enjoyed this, it seemed to hark back to the sort of movies we used to be good at making; brave, unconventional and tense.

I found this interesting at times to watch.

But on the whole was poorly written and poorly directed. Nowhere near as clever as it wishes it was.

Watch if you have watched all else.
