Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Halliwell's Film Guide

Charming period piece with fantasy bookends; the essence of the piece is its evocation of American society in the 1890s, and in its director's waspish way with a funny scene.

Rated - 4 starsVery pleasant film

I remember this from ages ago and so tried it again. It is a good story although a bit twee in places. Some of the 70s haircuts and clothes are a bit dodgy, but the actual film is enjoyable.

Far better than the recent Chris Rock efforts.

Rated - 2 starsForgettable

In a more indulgent mood I might have described this as aimiable nonsense. The 'characters' are cardboard cut-outs (Gene Tierney pretty and vacant, Spring Byington twittering away as usual, Charles Coburn as gruff but of course with a heart of gold, Don Ameche bland to the point of invisibility), the dialogue unmemorable. Not a very good film - infact, utter tosh. Two stars solely for the decor, costumes and colour.

If you enjoyed the Warren Beatty version of this film then this is nothing like it!It`s not a bad film but Heaven plays no part, only a small sequence of hell at the beggining and end.The story is simple,a man goes to Hell(Don Amechie)and tells his life story to Satin, some funny moments but overall wasn`t too engrossing and found myself at the end thinking cut to the chase. The moral of the story seems to be....Infidelity is good, but the film it isn`t.If you want Heaven try the Beatty version or Here comes mr Jordan.

Rated - 3 starsPleasant fluff

There's charm aplenty in this tale of a lifelong playboy who shows up in Hell after his death, seeking admittance. But seeing as the guy in charge is unsure as to his misdemeanours, we get treated to a life told in flashback. It's actually all very thin and of little consequence, but Lubitsh handles it all with a lightness of touch that's just about right. Ameche is just pleasant enough for us not to appreciate that his character is actually a bit of a louse, and the beautiful Tierney is wasted as the perfect wife.

Rated - 2 starsA very pleasant film

The title actually tells you the plot of the film. 'Heaven Can Wait' Warren Beattie has it all and is just about to become the very best in his profession when things start to go radically wrong. I saw this 20 or so years ago and wondered if it would stand the test of time. I am happy to report that it gave me just as much pleasure yeasterday as it did all those years ago. A simple story that doesn't need any brain work and therefore you are not likely to miss things.

A film that all the family can watch and I should think that the younger genration would find this very entertaining.
