Above my expectations considering it was made in '87, but still a cut below Howl and Spirited Away, I can honestly say Laputa Castle In The Sky was a really beautiful movie. The music was gorgeous throughout (bless you, Mr Hisaishi!!) and the visuals were darn good for their time. Don't listen to people who complain about the new english dub-each to their own I guess, but I found it charming and funny-all the actors seemed well suited to their roles, and despite rumours to the contrary, the script doesn't take many liberties from the original japanese (I watched the dub with subitles on ^^).

Although suitable for children, if you have any appreciation for tales of beauty, friendship and adventure this movie will appeal to any age group, young or old; as do most of Miyazaki's stunning creations. A small warning to those with short attentions spans though, this movie only really takes flight (excuse the pun!)in it's second half, but it is still so worth the wait.

I happily add this to my growing Ghibli collection!

This was my first introduction to Miyazaki's work. I watched this when i was about 10, (15 years ago!), but the images and emotions he created of this imaginary world stayed with me, until i rediscovered it about 5 years ago. Miyazaki, always seems to have strong young female characters and this one is no exception, which was perhaps part of its appeal for me. This is a great homage to Gullivers' Travels that will be enjoyed by child and adult alike.

Rated - 5 starsFab as always

For once a reasonable hollywood cast gives a decent voice over performance. Plenty for adults and their children to enjoy.

Rated - 4 starsThe translation lets it down

Lucia from Glasgow , 07/08/2006

Had seen this film as a child, dubbed into English when the film was first released. It was fantastic! So excited when it was re-released on DVD. And the Hollywood dubbing just upset me no end!! Bits were added in and changed :(

Other than that its a must see! If you haven't seen it before the translation wont bother you. It's so entertaining for all, non offensive but will keep you gripped! A must see!
