Brief synopsis of The Street

This gripping six part drama, marks the return of award winning writer Jimmy McGovern to the small screen, delving into the extraordinary lives of ordinary people at momentous points in their lives. With an all star cast, including Oscar winning Jim Broadbent (The Chronicles of Narnia and Moulin Rouge) Jane Horrocks (Little Voice), Timothy Spall (Harry Potter) and Sue Johnston (Waking the Dead) the series explores the powerful passions, emotions and disappointments of life. Written so that each episode is a unique and independent portrayal whilst remaining linked by the sense of community, shared experience and an indomitable sense of humour, The Street indulges in unconventional love stories from the back streets of a city up north.

Yes, at last a great series with believable characters and events. This is life, ok so all that may not happen in one street for those of you pedantic people, but about time we had more real drama and less police, and hospital programmes which bear little resemblance to real life. Anyone on any council estate or street in britain will be able to relate to stories about real people and real situations. It gets better and better, for dramatic realism, the street, for realistic comedy & drama, shameless. More like this please. Needs more stars

Sorry if I'm being fussy here but I found the acting rather poor in this series. Jim Broadbent is of course very good. However, Sue Johnston plays a particularly poor part, if only because her character is weak. Much better acting and better direction could certainly have improved this series. I agree with the other reviewers that some of the stories in this series may well touch a nerve. It's hard to believe that six major incidents could run concurrently in one street. However, typically Jimmy McGovern controls the writing and its well worth renting. If you're unsure if this programme is for you, its worth bearing with it and being patient.

We missed this on tv and only rented the discs when we noticed the new series starting on BBC. So glad we did. The writing is excellent. The bittersweet stories are so wonderfully rich and the characters so beautifully drawn we're totally hooked. Trying to catch up and watch the new series.

Brilliant, watch it!

Loved this so much I actually went out and bought it. Loved the way the stories all built up to a huge climax but were individual enough for you to watch one at a time. Jimmy McGovern is one of the country's greatest writers and this was excellently cast, directed and scripted. Lee Ingleby was exceptional. Found the Jim Broadbent one quite upsetting and the Timothy Spall story was lovely.
