Brief synopsis of Call of Duty 2

It is, we admit, sometimes difficult to keep track of all the different World War II shooters. But Call of Duty was a pretty outstanding effort, an FPS that was both arcadey and atmospheric, with a structure that eschewed giving you one player to control for the whole game in favour of a range of protagonists to play as: an American Paratrooper, a Royal Marine Commando and a Russian tank commander. If you were a fan back in 2003, youll know that it was showered with Game of the Year awards.

Now Activision bring you the sequel to developer Infinity Wards acclaimed shooter. Theyve pulled out the stops this time, with the aim of bringing players what they claim is the most realistic WWII game yet, and thats up against some pretty stiff opposition. And this time its not only smug PC gamers playing Infinity Ward has decided that the spanking new Xbox 360 also has what it takes to showcase their new game. Once again, the game hops around the European theatre of operations, and youll find yourself facing Rommel himself in tank battles across the deserts of North Africa, scaling cliffs on D-Day and hunting tanks in a Russia ripped to shreds by the conflict.

The single player game puts you in the middle of huge battles, and youll have to rely on your comrades around you. A sophisticated squad system connects you intimately with the dozens of soldiers fighting by your side, and theyll give you covering fire, take cover themselves, even distract the enemy from what you are up to. Theyll also alert you to the hazards around you, giving you forewarning of approaching enemies and incoming fire. The environments are more atmospheric and complex than ever, with wrecked cityscapes and shell-churned countryside, obscured by rain, smoke, fog and snow, and illuminated by dynamic, shadow-casting lighting.

This being a sequel to a PC only shooter, it would be nothing without a solid multiplayer mode, and the game sees a return of the distinctive Call of Duty team-based experience. Not the first opportunity this year to join the fray of Axis vs. Allies, but nonetheless, looking really good for it.

Call of Duty 2 was by far and away the best of the 360's launch titles, next generation graphics and incredible gameplay (coupled with some really fierce computer AI) make this a must have/rent for the new console owners.

The only let down which had me banging my teeth on a kerb was the lack of coop play in the campaign mode. If you're not Live enabled and want a game you can play for hours with the lads and a few beers....look away now.

Extraordianry 1 player game though.

Yup, I agree. Chaotic, brutal and on veteran difficulty absolutely beyond-unforgiving. In fact if there's one criticism of CoD II it's that it features rather unrealistic opponents who will shoot you at any point you immerge from cover. Stealth is no option. Which is fine, if you want a challenge. I did, and I enjoyed it, but there are many moments that will have you screaming. If you play on a lesser difficulty the game is likely too easy, but will be a less sweary experience! However, if you want to see a war shooter without the rose-tinting, this is a must-play - some of the set pieces produce beautiful and rather poingnant moments that you won't forget.

This game was awesome in its day but has well and truely passed its sell by date now - I used to find the graphics to be amazing and gameplay great but after playing this game again I cannot believe that I once thought these things - it has terrible graphics and a fustratingly hard and overly complicated gameplay and controls - EASY 50g though - COMPLETE TRAINING !!!!

Got this with my Xbox 360 and have really enjoyed playing it. The graphics are up to the best PC standard and the missions are varied and involving.

Online play is a bit old school (deathmatch, capture the flag etc) but still enjoyable.

Altogether a title I'd recommend if your into first person shooters and/or war games in general.
