Brief synopsis of Baldur's Gate : Dark Alliance

Role-playing games that follow the Dungeons and Dragons rules are typically the preserve of PC gamers, so when such a game is developed and designed exclusively for a next generation console, PC and console owners alike should take note. Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance for PlayStation 2 is one such game.

You and your family have been driven from your farmland home and have to head off to seek refuge within the walls of Baldurs Gate. But prior to your arrival, thieves who claim to have journeyed from Baldurs Gate mug you for all youve got, but more importantly, kidnap your sister too. Your task is to find her and rescue her at all costs. And so began the tale of Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance.

Developed by Black Isle Studios, the playing world of Dark Alliance has been rendered beautifully. Fully interactive light-sourced environments and a full complement of creepy crawlies and ultimate overlords all help to completely immerse the player in an all-new and classic role-playing game.

Dark Alliance combines a variety of game genres including puzzle elements, but combat is perhaps the most prominent gameplay characteristic. You must master a series of weapons and learn new spells to defeat some truly cunning AI. Some encounters will see the enemy attacking in numbers, while others will see you facing a single deadly foe with tremendous brute force. So rest assured, you will be kept on guard throughout the entirety of the games 30 or so levels.

Players can also customise their characters to great detail, and can even specify how a characters experienced is used. Therefore, Dark Alliances characters can be altered to suit any preferred role-playing style.

Dark Alliance is the first of its kind on PlayStation 2 and sets the benchmark for other similar role-playing games to follow.

This is the first in the 2 part series for the PS2 released 5 years ago but still retains it freshness and playability (particularly as a smooth 2 player cooperative. A dungeons and dragons game ideal for those who like LOTR. You can choose from several different playable character types (dwarf, barbarian, elf etc)each with their own unique set of skills that will come into effect at different sections of the story. As you journey and battle through the story over the many different detailed levels you increase your experience, strengths and powers and pick up weapon upgrades or gold to buy them. The wide mix of bad guys come one at a time and all together, seeking to hurt you in a host of different ways. The graphics and gameplay are smooth and enjoyable featuring a mix of easy puzzles, magic and swordplay. On easy setting you don't have to be a games master to complete this one to the end although the scale of the game means it will take a while. Play on your own or use the excellent cooperative gameplay, either way it is first class.

I thought the use of controls and game play was brilliant there were a few problems I had with it though. In the dark tower it gets a bit boring as all you are doing is killing things i think there should be challenges you have to complete or something else to complicate it. also there is not enough game play, the entire game can be completed in less than 8 hours and most of it is wasted on travelling or looking through vast areas the worst example of this is Adderspine road east as its huge with a disproportionately small population of enemies. even though I have pointed out a lot wrong I was still satisfied
