Brief synopsis of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

The Devil May Cry series has become something of a staple on the PS2. Developed in-house by Capcom, the first game cast the player as Dante, a private investigator of the supernatural. It seems that 2000 years ago a demon rebelled against the devil in a bid to help mankind. Dante holds within him the ancient demonic power to repel the devil himself, who is rallying his forces to attack the earth once more. Charging his power as he went, the third-person action title saw Dante wielding his sword and twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory, with plenty of pleasingly balletic and violent special attacks, fighting huge and terrifying monsters in the bowels of Hell. This not being enough to defeat the very Devil, Dante also had to collect special weapons with elemental powers that would give him the powerful special attacks he would undoubtedly need. Devil May Cry 2 featured more adventures of the powerful demon slayer. All the old skills were present, supplemented by new ones including the ability to run along walls, flying kicks, and multi-directional shooting. Dante?s Devil Trigger, by which he was able to control his supernatural attacks, was improved for the sequel, and the game also featured a new character, Lucia, whose special skill was with the knife. Now Dante returns in Devil May Cry 3. Or rather he already has, as the game is in fact a prequel, set before the first game, with an involving plotline following the clash of Sparda?s twin sons. This time instead of being lumbered with the same weapons, players can customise Dante?s weapons and fighting styles, choosing from a selection of firearms and swords. The elegant graphics and animations that characterised the game make a return as well, looking better than ever before, and the game is doubtless on the shopping list of many a fan of the Devil May Cry series.

This is a great devil may cry game that goes back to the roots of the original devil may cry & gives fans of the series a look inside dantes troubled past, the only downside i had with the game is that alot of the levels are short and the overall lengh of the game seemed shorter than the past two and i mangaed to complete it in two days, overall a great game and a great rent i would recommend it to fans and newcomers to devil may cry.

This is how it should be done. DMC 2 was as bad as it gets, but this goes back to how the 1st game became a classic. Great fun and a game that you could just keep playing and playing. Great.

Rated - 5 starsAction Pefection

If you want an action game, this is the best the PS2 has to offer, but be warned your thumbs will bleed and you will die many times. But the beautiful thing about this game is each time you die you will gain a deeper understanding of how to play, and in time you will become a master. If you've played the first DMC but didn't like it, don't be put off. The differences between the two games are small but crucial (instant reactions to commands, the ability to replay any mission at any time) and turn it from a slightly sloppy action horror, into a super-responsive high action title. Also the plots from the two games sync up nicely which is impressive considering the first one is set after this. The cutscenes are plentiful and the best produced I've seen, I thought the cheesy rock soundtrack would be annoying but ended up putting it on my iPod, and the boss battles are extremely deep and take a lot of mastering, it's a shame there's not a seperate mode for playing them on their own. If I had to find fault it's that the extra weapons you get during the game are cool but pointless since most of the time the sword and handguns you get at the start are the most useful weapons.

Rated - 3 starsSpoiled by a major flaw

DMC3 is an amazing and challenging game which is almost entirely spoiled by one major flaw - a total lack of restart points.

Many a time I found myself facing a boss character after over 20 minutes of gameplay only to be killed and sent right back to the start of the level, by the second or third time I was killed I was ready to throw the disc out of the window.

The game does employ yellow masks which can be purchased and used as restarts but even these are redundant as you restart with none of the inventory you may have used on the last attempt.

Now don't get me wrong, I love a challenging game, I don't expect to clock a level or a boss on first trying but if I do die I would prefer to only have to repeat the bit I failed on, not the whole level.

Games like God of War and Prince of Persia got this right, it's such a shame to see an otherwise awesome game marred by such an annoying flaw. I hope they address this before the fourth installment.
