Brief synopsis of X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

Activision's last X-Men Legends game was the best selling X-Men videogame of all time. Members of the X-Men are a lot of people's favourite superheroes (not ours, we like Spidey best) and now they return to videogames in X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse. The game charts a most interesting time in mutant history. The devilish Apocalypse has gotten hold of a secret prophecy which looks to be the key to world domination. The only choice for the mighty X-Men ? and all of planet earth ? is to do the unthinkable, and join forces with their mortal enemies, the Brotherhood. Yes, the Brotherhood! Villains as detestable as Magneto, Toad and Nightcrawler must fight shoulder to shoulder with Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue and Jean Grey. There are sixteen characters to choose from in this most unlikely of alliances. But you're going to need all the help you can get, up against Apocalypse with his incredibly mighty, if often a little obscure team of evil helpers, including Omega Red, Mr. Sinister, Archangel and Sauron. The name of the game is customisation, too. Each superhero (or villain) has 10 standard super-powers. To this, you can add more customised special powers and groovy equipment that you'll find strewn about the game's huge levels. If your outfit looks a bit 'last season', you have a choice of others to change into so you can make sure you're always looking super-fresh. The battle takes you round the threatened globe, with locations as diverse as the South Pole and Egypt, and there's a massive 70 free roaming environments to explore. The storyline is flexible and open-ended, and it truly is up to you to solve the game's many puzzles to ensure that Apocalypse and over 100 accompanying different types of enemy are defeated. An incredibly flexible multiplayer mode means that your friends can jump in and battle with you at any time. There's also an online mode that offers many different variations of play. Chock full of characters, with huge environments, a variable storyline and tons of options, there's a lot of work been put into this title. If you're an X-Men fan, it's an absolute must-have.

Rated - 3 starsGood, but repetitive

This type of pseudo roll playing game isn't my usual cup of tea, but an obsession with Wolverine meant I couldn't pass up a test. Good graphics, simple button mashing combat system and varied powerups and character modifiers are the plus points. Horrifically detailed story, rubbish voice acting and a tendency to find yourself running around thinking 'what am I meant to be doing now?' are the bad points. True X-Men fans will like the detail. Action / RPG fans will find it falls somewhere in the middle of the two. Good holiday travel fodder.

Call me “Mr Impatient” if you want (it’s a once only deal, so enjoy), but I lost interest in this title after the second level. Technically this title works far better on PS2. OK, I’m only assuming that…but I did play the first game on Xbox, and as far as I remember, I was not wanting to rabidly eat my gamepad every 5 minutes because the game was taking too long to load, the display was grinding to a halt every time a few enemies `crowded` the screen and the levels were so dark you needed night vision spectacles to navigate them successfully.

Having said that, it is X-men, and there are not a whole lot of action-RPGs crawling there way through the PSP software catalogue, so if you really, really need to play one and love Marvel in a very special way, then you will probably forgive some of its technical shortcomings. Hopefully these problems won’t blight the forthcoming Marvel Ultimate Alliance which could (please almighty one/s) be the action-RPG to own on PSP when it comes out later this year.

5/10

Rated - 5 starsA world of its own!

From the moment I slotted my UMD in to the drive, I had a feeling this game was going to be hot!

From the intro sequences to the game play, this role playing game comes up tops on all levels.

With amazing sound, incredible 3d effects, characters rendered to the most amazing details, even the scenery is interactive on a level I never thought possible on a hand held!

This is my first game and it totally blew me away, it’s really has inspired me to keep my PSP, after many concerns over boring titles.

The only hitch with this game is it gets slow in certain points where there are a lot of characters on screen, but I assume this will improve with different incarnations.

I true masterpiece, I am thoroughly impressed.

I give it 9 out of 10.

Graphically okay and playable, just not very enthralling. In fact, quite boring.

Rated - 3 starsFun if you have patience and great eyesight!

This game is great fun to play and is great playing with the X Men powers such as freezing the baddies with Iceman, although this game suffers as it is hard to see what was going on in dark environments on a small screen. Also for some reason, I wasn't exactly sure what to do, it would be better with hints keep popping up if you get stuck. But no, you can walk about for ten minutes and nothing happens. The loading of the game seems to take ages as well and it happens far to often, you can load a level then you need to go into another room and it has to load again then you want to go out the room, you get the picture! Its a shame really as it is a fairly good game apart from its problems, give it a try and you may like it!
