Brief synopsis of Condemned

Monolith Productions is garnering some highly enthusiastic attention at the moment. The team behind the warmly received No One Lives Forever has been in the press again recently following the release of the psychological shock shooter F.E.A.R. And the release of the Xbox 360 was just the excuse for a console foray after years of specialising in the PC end of the gaming scene. Teaming up with SEGAs American arm they bring you Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Continuing the developers current penchant for the darker side of things, Condemned puts you in the well-polished brogues of FBI Agent Thomas, whose chosen field is the study, pursuit and capture of serial killers. Track these death-worshipping humans like the animals they are through their preferred habitat mazes of broken windows, crumbling brickwork and dilapidated tenements. Your long-developed skills as a detective and a range of precision forensic tools will help you, but youll have to rely just as much on split second reactions and brawling skills if you are to get out of your mission in one piece.

Monolith made its name showing what could be done on games running through Windows, at a time when nobody believed in a DOS-less future for PC gaming. This technical expertise is brought to bear on the latest Microsoft confection, the 360, with lighting, texture mapping and filtering techniques employed that are like nothing youll have seen this generation. The first person viewpoint that Monolith favours is used, but this is still an adventure game where you execute melee moves on your quarries, as well as pick up and throw a variety of inanimate objects. Full compatibility with 5:1 surround sound will allow you to take advantage of your home movie set-up, and sophisticated and reactive enemy AI completes the package, making Condemned a suitable tech fest for a debut on such an able machine. You also get, as is the vogue these days, an involving plot with twists a plenty to keep you interested. If your new Xbox 360 has just joined an already impressive array of high-end entertainment technology in your front room, heres just the thing to put your new setup through its paces.

Codemned was one of the first games I played. I was fortunate enough to play in the dark, with the sound up. Surely the only way to play games on the 360?

I thought this game was really atmospheric, spooky and sinister. I got totally gripped by the story line and often jumped out of my skin or soiled the sofa when confronted by a crazy axe wielding tramp.

There are lots to do in this game, collect all the TV's, metal, dead birds (??) and unravel the mystery of the serial killer.

If you like this one, check out F.E.A.R for scares. Just don't forget to wear the brown trousers when you see people moving in the shadows, or hear voices shouting behind the walls.

very dark, atmospheric gameplay. grimy sets and lighting are used to good effect too. The realism in the games is a refreshing departure from the usual mutant monsters applied to scary titles..

gameplay does get a bit reptitive tho, and there could be better background music although the uncluttered soundtrack is eerie enough. anyway in the end i bought the game as a result of the 1 week rental trial, will keep it for rainy nights.

Rated - 5 starsBest launch title, under-rated thriller.

Takes you into the world of a somewhat psychic FBI agent who's powers have been noticed. Chilling deep story line with a huge serving of gore and violence.

AI and characters are somewhat of a mishap, the AI seems to follow the same pattern through out the game and become repetitive and easy, but then again you can die at any moment. The attitudes and some of the responses and choices made by the characters seems illogical just to keep the story going at time.

Graphics are somewhat out dated but can still hold their own. Sounds, environments and weaponry are this games strong points, every building and encounter is frightening.

5/5 Well worth it.

Rated - 3 starsnice but...

A customer from UK, ENGLAND , 24/03/2007

Iam 25 years old and i have never been afraid of horror movies or games before. This game made me jump out of my chair !!!! this game crippy!!!!!

However the game becomes boring after a while due to the similarity of each stage. the gameplay is always in the dark and the same grey-dark colours are same through out the game.

The story is ok but is a bit short! However the end of the game is very very nice.

3/5 is a fair result
