Brief synopsis of Star Wars Battlefront II

The first Star Wars Battlefront followed a successful formula for LucasArts; of mimicking a popular videogame and adding Star Wars characters, storylines, locations and production values. Star Wars Galaxies was your standard MMORPG, but with the added - and not to be underestimated - attraction that you could play as a Jedi, Bounty Hunter or Wookie. In the same way, Star Wars Battlefront was a popular and innovative FPS Battlefield 1942 with a liberal twist of LucasArts magic, allowing you to fight on foot or take to the skies in famous spaceships from the Star Wars films.

Like BF1942, it was little more than a multiplayer game, but very popular nonetheless. So its no surprise that developer Pandemic has been commissioned to create a sequel. What is perhaps a little surprising is the breadth of what the studio has come up with. The game is much larger that the original. The single player mode - criticised as little more than a bot match in the first game - has been given an overhaul, with better AI for both enemies and allies. Theres also a much more involving story mode.

A re-vamped space battle mode means you can control the action strategically at arms length, or take to the skies in your own starfighter, be it an X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or one of the less interesting ships from the new films. Once inside your smaller plane, you can attack specified areas on enemy ships like in Rogue Squadron, engage in dogfights, or even fly inside large ships, jump out and take them down from the inside.

There are 16+ Battlefronts to try out, including locations from the recent Episode III like Utapau, Mustafar and Coruscant, the seat of the Republic itself. Naturally the opportunity to play as a Jedi is given, and as before, you can play Rebels vs. Empire like the first films or Republic vs CIS as in the newer films. Essentially like having a huge playset of all the Star Wars toys you could ever want, SWBII has an enormous amount to offer the Star Wars fans who wish to immerse themselves in the rich SW universe. And an all-encompassing online mode allows you to enjoy the game against like-minded individuals too.

Well, This is a game for Star-Wars fans first and foremost. Battlefront 2, sequel to Star Wars Battlefront, is a game of rebels and stormtroopers, X-Wings and Tie Fighters and new to the series, Jedi knights

Battlefront (and Battlefront 2) is a first person shooter with objectives and teamwork but dont let that fool you, this game only has the semblance of a brain

Basically you choose which side you'll fight for (Either the Republic or the CIS in the Clone Wars or the Empire of the Rebels in the Intergalactic Civil War) then pick a character class (basic squaddie is the usual one to choose) and which command post to spawn at.

You need to capture enemy command posts and try to defend yours. You can get your bots to follow you and fight with you but really its just a matter of running around shooting anyone who ISNT one of you and taking over command posts when you see them.

Throw into the mix vehicles (At-St's for one but also speeder bikes and X-Wings) and hero characters that become available either based on time or your score.

The hero's, espc the Jedi, are great fun. Jedi obviously have agility allowing them to make huge leaps, they can parry blaster shots with thier lightsabre and obviously carve up the enemy with your lightsabre. However all the hero's lose energy slowly and only regain it by killing enemy soldiers, so you have to be where the action is!

There are also other mission types which involve starships. These new space based missions feature dog fights between X-Wings and Tie Fighters, bombing runs by Y-Wings and Tie-Bombers and boarding actions by marines. These are imho great fun and you can really get into a Star Wars feel, espcially with the movie music on the soundtrack to the game. I found myself constanlty quoting from the movies.

Bad points: The game is very shallow, there is only the barest hint of stratedgy, the character classes arent all useful (the engineer is very limited in his appeal) and with four players, the screens become fairly small. The single player campaign is also a bit lacking but is an improvement on the first game at least

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is WELL worth renting out if you like multi player shooters (with 2 or 4, this game SHINES) and is a good pick up and play blast-em-up

This is one game where you wont get a bad feeling
