Brief synopsis of Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

Some may say theres only one Kong in videogames, and we all know who that is: Donkey Kong, Marios first opponent. Games lore has it that Shigeru Miyamoto gave his ape villain his first name because he wanted to convey a sense of stubbornness. More whimsical observers have quipped that it was a spelling mistake, and those crazy Japanese fellows wanted him to be called Monkey Kong. Whatever the truth is, nobody has any doubt regarding the origins of the second name of the abducting ape.

Now the original king-sized primate might have something to say, as the world braces itself for what must be the third or fourth remake of King Kong, directed this time by Brain Dead hobbit Peter Jackson. As we often remark, not many blockbuster films get away without being re-made as a videogame tie-in. Its worth saying though that Peter Jackson - very outspoken regarding the lack of involvement he was permitted with EAs LOTR games - had a lot of input with Ubisoft during the development of this Kong franchise.

We havent seen the film at the time of writing, but weve high hopes for it Oscar winner Jackson is well-known for attention to detail and the spectacular, and we note with approval after seeing the trailers that he's not drawn the line at a huge CGI ape there are flipping dinosaurs in it too. Bonanza!

The storyline for the new movie takes a self-referential twist. In the past, the Americans exploring the mysterious forgotten island have been painted variously as explorers and oil prospectors. This time around they are a party led by a film director, who needs a blockbuster to boost his flagging career. Also in the group are a screenwriter charged with penning the comeback, an actress to star in it, and the crew of the ship that got them there from Great Depression-era New York.

You get to play as every member of the group even as Kong himself as you play through the game, from the beginning on Skull Island, when Ann the actress is kidnapped by a local tribe, to the showdown where...well, we don't want to give anything away!

Bananas and flying barrels are in short supply in this most cinematic of games, but as for solving puzzles and smashing things? You have to admit it sounds promising.

I think I got about 8 hours of total play out of this and I am not a hardcore gamer by any means.

Nothing about the game really impressed, everything was completely linear, the combat was just button bashing, there were no puzzles to solve, no choices to make and no real sense of involvement.

All in all rather disappointing, even the graphics did not really seem to impress and the mechanical and repetitive gameplay genuinely dragged on.

If you wish to increase your gamerscore by 1000 points then this is a top rental but if you're looking for a little adventure then try elsewhere.

some people are really harsh on reviews on this site, i imagine thats because they cant do the games tho, this was quite interesting, looked fantastic and the game play was that of most shooters, but its key element of game play was how u was against things twice the size of you atleast, so you could try run out and fight a dino or u cud run away and find a way to trick it into a trap... there are torches hanging everywhere u can shoot down to burn the long grass and brush which will kill dinos right off.. its a game for smart and thinking people

king kong is the game for the box office smash of the same name. It follows a similar story of the film and features voice acting from the actual films cast. At first glance, this sounds very promising, however from actual game play it is a completely different story. Gameplay is dull and repetitive, and graphicaly there is little difference between the 360 and normal xbox. my honest advice is to avoid this game, especially if you already have it on another console.

If your a die hard king kong fan, then it is worth a short rental, but if not, avoid!

Il honestly admit i added this title to my rent list for 1000points nothing more. Havent seen and not bothered about seeing the film but knew this was any easy gamerscore game. Its a mild to moderately difficult game. regular games players wont have a problem, casual gamers and young kids might find it a bit tricky due to lack to targeting crosshairs

Bearing in mind this is a launch title so is nearly 3 years old its actually pretty decent. Graphics are ok the problem lies (with alot of lisenced games) the environment and scenery doesnt change. Every single level off this game except the last is set in a jungle and after a few hours it just all looks the same, you want something different something fresh and you never get it.

The controls are actually kinda fun i thought! a little strange at first and a lttle innovative, not ground breaking but a little change. you play in first person and have usual list of weapons, handguns, shot guns and sniper rifle but the weapon you will use the most is spears and bone (thrown like spears lol). you dont have a cross hair so after a throw or two to get your bairing your judging your timing and throwing and become a grade a spear chucker in no time. some people didnt like this aspect but i did. You also get to play as kong for a few levels which is good for breaking up the game and playing as the big ape was kinda fun

Another big strength this game has is progression and level design, i coimpleted it in one day because akthough the scenary got boring and fighting was a little repatative your kinda objectives and more so maps were very good at mixing it up. I know i said the scenery and graphics looked the same so how could the maps be different but they are. there are some simple puzzles regarding getting access to fire to burn the long grass to get a handle to open a door type puzzles. nothing too taxing on the brain but enough to stop you from getting completely bored. the game lasts about 8 hours which is perfect although i would like to have had alot more time in new york (although the graphics there were pretty damn bad). the camera when you playing as kong is insaley frustrating, constantly jumping angles and often facing you so you running blind not a clue whats ahead of you.

Now the flaws which there are considerable. 1 this game is riddled with bugs, and being so far from launch dont expect updates. when i finished level 2 the music because this agonising screaming over and over louder and louder. i thought it was the ingame music but when i saved, went to title screen and reloaded it was gone but really annoying when it happened. i had issues with some stuff not loading properly and had to reload for that. and you cant restart a chapter without completing it first. crazy. the environment does get a little dull and you can see its age.

This title is definitely worth the rent and if your after the gamerpoints you might discover a little game that aint that bad, i know i did. i wouldnt say its very replayable. i enjoyed playing through it but wont ever play it again.
