Brief synopsis of The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Director Andrew Adamson gives a new dimension to C.S. Lewis's enchanting story with this long-awaited Disney adaptation. As the story begins, Mrs. Pevensie in order to keep her children safe during World War II sends Lucy (Georgie Henley), Edmond (Skandar Keynes), Susan (Anna Popplewell), and Peter (William Moseley) off to stay at a professor's country estate. Away from London and under the care of a strict housekeeper, they are instructed to stick to themselves and stay out of trouble. But when an innocent game of hide-and-seek leads young Lucy to a spare room containing a large wardrobe, she discovers something that will change their lives forever. Inside the wardrobe there is a world frosted with ice and filled with magical beings. Known as Narnia, the land is stuck in eternal winter at the hands of the cruel White Witch, played with great force by the pale, strong-featured Tilda Swinton. When she steps back into reality, Lucy struggles to convince her sceptical siblings of the things she's seen. After much disbelief, the others finally enter the world as well, learning that the creatures of Narnia have long been waiting for humans like themselves to appear and break the witch's spell. But in order to be of any help to the lovable talking beavers, fawns, foxes, and centaurs that they meet, the four will have to face betrayal by one of their own as Edmond cracks under the witch's tempting offer of unlimited Turkish Delights. Under the leadership of the great lion Aslan (voice of Liam Neeson), can Lucy, Edmond, Susan, and the oldest, Peter, prove themselves heroes in the ultimate battle of good vs. evil? High-budget special effects, impressive performances by the film's young newcomers, and beautiful set design move this film far beyond previous television adaptations.

Rated - 5 starsA special film

A customer from Cheshire, England , 12/12/2005

Any one who loves this book should not be disappointed with this film adaptation. Disney have made their best film in a long time. Films never ever come near to truly capturing the full essence of a much-loved classic, but this one does manage to do get as close as a film is likely to get. Disney were taking a huge risk here as most of their audience will be adults who loved this story as a child and still carry that love into adult-hood, and would not be willing to give acclaim if not truly justified.

Aslan is superb, you'll be convinced that he is real. His death is well portrayed although nowhere near as cruel as in the book, probably to save the youngsters in the audience from bawling their eyes out, although it didnt save all the adults from shedding a tear (myself and a friend included). Opening scenes are very dark and dingy (air raids and black-out curtains), but once into Narnia the scenes are beautiful. Should not be compared to LOTR or HP&TGOF, this film is different in a sense that you can truly believe in it. The White Witch was well portrayed, she was suitably evil and cold in the battle scene, but the true winner in this film was Mr Tumnus, he couldn't possibly have been depicted in a better way. The scenes between him and Lucy are special - probably the best acted in the film. Lucy is great, and Edmund was ok, but Peter and Susan were terribly wooden and didnt manage to carry the characters well. Watch out for Philip - his couple of one-liners will give you a laugh. 9.9/10.

Rated - 5 starsA Classic For All Ages

Lighthouse from BRIGHTON , 14/09/2006

Stop pretending this is a children’s film. If you are eight or a hundred and eight this movie is a classic.

C S Lewis conjured up a magic land and Narnia still holds a kind of mystery for us all.

This film manages to satisfy even the most jaded amongst us. The kids in this production are spot on as is the directing. So do not compare this to films that have all the action and no heart. This is right up there with the best. A film with a soul that is a fine addition to the books. Wonderful stuff.

Rated - 4 starsTrue to the original

Shimo from Belfast , 25/12/2005

I haven't read the book or watched the original movie since I was very young, however this movie brought back the memories in force. I remember how I felt when I saw it as a child, and the story started coming back to be.

The story is kept intact, the special effects are very good and it is enjoyable. A bad feature of it, however, is the very annoying children acting in it. Thankfully they aren't annoying enough to ruin it.

Rated - 4 starsThe Chronicles of Narnia

Graham from UK [Highly rated reviewer] , 25/01/2007

It was really only a matter of time before this children’s classic book was adapted for the big screen and in doing so the directors, makers and cast created a really enjoyable movie that can be enjoyed by all ages. The Chronicles of Narnia is based on the legendary classic C.S Lewis novel The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe an unforgettable tale set in the midst of World War II. This story like the book is a story of imagination and adventure and follows 4 children sent away from the cities to avoid the bombing who stumble across a mysterious wardrobe that leads to an entire other world where they are called upon to take arms against the evil white witch. The Chronicles of Narnia contains plenty for all ages, magic and mystery a very enjoyable flash back to a time where children played and used their imagination for entertainment and not a video game! The scenery is wonderful and the plot undeniably enchanting and we could not possibly imagine anyone disliking this film with reviews ranging from 3 to 5 stars pending on taste. This is certainly not an epic in the Lord of the Rings ilk so please do not expect it to be, its lighted hearted and sprinkled with comedy amidst the adventure, both my wife and I found this a really enjoyable watch and providing you do not expect a seriously gritty epic adventure you will not be disappointed. Not a 5 star in our opinion but still highly entertaining. 4 Stars.
