Brief synopsis of Just Like Heaven

Reese Witherspoon plays ambitious medical intern Elizabeth, who regularly clocks in 20 hour days at the hospital. Her work is her life, much to the chagrin of her sister Abby, who is married, with kids, and constantly attempting to get Elizabeth to go out more. When Abby finally succeeds in setting up a blind date for her sister, Elizabeth has an accident en route while driving to meet the mystery man, and the stage is set for love. David (Mark Ruffalo) has been apathetically searching for a new apartment in the cutthroat San Francisco housing market, while attempting to overcome his wife's death two years ago. When he finally finds the perfect place, nothing is going to make him leave, and this includes the blonde control freak (Elizabeth) who suddenly shows up while he's busy vegetating. She claims the apartment is hers, and it becomes ever clearer that Elizabeth doesn't remember her past, and shows irrefutable signs of being a ghost...

Rated - 4 starsJust like... A good romantic comedy.

OK, so it's not hilariously funny, the plot takes some believing and this film is about as intellectually challenging as watching Richard & Judy. But so what! The leading characters Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Mark Ruffalo) are both attractive and likeable and their relationship builds at a nice pace so most viewers will be there at the end hoping for a happy conclusion. The acting from leads and support is good and the film has a warm glow about it, managing to be romantic without quite becoming fingers down the throat stuff. Even a big hairy bloke like me who's not supposed to like this type of film enjoyed it. If you're a hardened cynic with no romance in your soul you'll hate it, for the rest of us of it's a fine feel good movie. Great for a cosy night in — all you'll need is this film, a comfy sofa and someone to cuddle up with...

Okay I'm a bloke! I've promised the wife that if she watches some of the footie that I'll endure the predictable woolly rom-coms that she loves.

What arrives on the mat - 'Just like heaven'.

Okay it's predictable you know what's going to happen form the start, you know who the set-pieces that will happen, and all the cliches.

However I have to admit I loved it. I think I even enjoyed it more than the wife. Now I was of able body and sound mind - I normally prefer Asian Cinema and a great thriller, but I couldn't help smiling all the way through.

This is made easier by the fantastic Reese Wetherspoon who waltzs with easy and the great Mark Ruffalo.

Choose this over the tame 'Rumour has it' which also stars Mark Ruffalo.

May now ditch the England game to watch 'Maid in Manhattan'!

Only kidding!!!!!!!!

Rated - 3 starsglossy comfort film

A customer from Edinburgh, Scotland , 18/01/2008

This is the kind of film to rent if you need something to watch while you're suffering from flu. It's glossy, silly and wholly undemanding: there are pretty apartments to look at and Reese Witherspoon is as always a quirky and engaging presence. However, when you've recovered you'll probably find it's glossy, undemanding silliness infuriating. This is a film that doesn't stand up well to the slightest critical prodding: there's absolutely no chemistry between the leading actors, the romance fails to convince on every level (even regardless of the fact that it's about ... er... a person falling in love with a ghost) and - worst of all - Mark Ruffalo is wholly unappealing and a woeful bit of miscasting. If though you want a bit of comforting fluffy gloss that floats by while you can relax in the certainty that it will all work out happily in the end, then you could do an awful lot worse than this.

Cheesy chick flick..... and yet I adored it.

Beautiful, charming, wonderful film. You should get this out and pretend that it is for your Mrs, then secretly sit back and enjoy.
