Series three of UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS takes place between 1912 and 1914, starting with Lady Majorie's fateful voyage on the RMS Titanic and ending just prior to the advent of World War I. Richard Bellamy must cope with life without his wife and wastrel son James settles down and gets married, although the relationship is uneven at best. The domestic staff are headed by Hudson the Butler, a conservative and very proper Scot who has to contend with the 'below stairs' behaviour of the household staff, among them cook Mrs Bridges and maidservant Rose. This set contains all thirteen episodes of series three. It also includes the third part of the ongoing documentary series about the making of Upstairs Downstairs.

upstairs downstairs is one of the most popular and very enjoyable family dramas thats ever been made, we are just making our way through every episode, and love every minute of it, there should be more of this type of programme and less of this reality tv stuff, that we get blasted with today

Rated - 4 starsUpstairs Downstairs Disk 4

A customer from Leics , 05/01/2007

There is only one episode of the series on this disk, but it is a memorable one, the start of the first world war, it accurately portrays the feeling of that time of the joy of the population that signalled the start of the war. The special feature at the end is very interesting as is seeing surviving members of the cast as they are now.

Rated - 5 starsUpstairs Downstairs Disk 3

This disk holds three of the best episodes of this drama serial in my opinion, Goodwill to all men where the stark reality of the class system is pointed out to a naive Georgina, Perfect Stranger where Rose meets an Australian and falls in love with him, only to give up her only hope of happiness for duty to the Bellamy family, and Distant Thunder, a truely beautifully written episode, opening with Hazel in mourning after suffering a miscarriage, and James totally unable to cope, full of building tensions in the household, culminating in a spectacular argument between Rose and Hudson, replicating the mood of the time as the country stood on the brink of the first world war. This is quality British Period drama at its best.

Rated - 5 starsUpstairs Downstairs again!

We are hooked on this series. The structure works so well; the interplay between servants and mistress/master is very fruitful, and their own stories so well told. The backcloth of the era is beautifully drawn. Writing could hardly be bettered, and tha acting consistently brilliant. Hudson the butler (Gordon Jackson)is the key character and every nuance in his performance excellent. The thought of coming to the final episode is hard to take.
