Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

While not in the same class as The Player, this savage Tinseltown satire from director George Huang is often hilarious in between its bouts of numbingly bleak cynicism. Unfolding its story in a series of flashbacks, it features Frank Whaley as the hapless assistant of heartless Hollywood mogul Kevin Spacey, who enjoys exercising his power right down to the brand of sweetener he wants in his coffee. Spacey's dazzling portrayal of the acid-tongued executive is the most memorable facet of this tar-black comedy, which is heavy on industry in-jokes and vicious put-downs.

Entertainment Weekly

"...Spacey takes this archetypal jerk to new levels of tyrannical bravado in the exuberantly nasty SWIMMING WITH SHARKS..." -- Rating: B+

Rated - 2 starsDistinctly average

Kevin Spacey is the only touch of class in this film, and the sole saviour of the film receiving a one star rating from me. He plays an executive movie producer who takes great delight in making his assistant's life a misery (who is weakley acted out by the unbelievable Frank Whaley). Spacey delivers some razor-sharp, witty put-downs, and I'm sure a lot of people will be able to relate to an ecotistical boss making their life a misery.

However, excluding an unpredictable and interesting-enough ending, the film plods along with very little plot changes or development of characters, apart from the daily humiliation from Spacey of his bumbling assistant.

Worth a watch for Spacey fans, or an unchallenging watch on a rainy day, but very little to get excited about.

Smug as ever and a polished performance but it didn't really do the trick for me. Watchable but difficult to feel anything for any of the characters.

Rated - 2 starsUnbelievable

KS is good as usual but the other chap is v. weak and unbelievable, comes across as a 6th former.

Film is OTT, didn't find it funny and also the dubbing is slightly out which was annoying.

Rated - 3 starsWorth watching for Spacey's excellent performance

McClennan from St Helens , 15/01/2006

A lowly assistant to a studio producer learns the hard way about getting on in the film business. His boss, an excellent Kevin Spacey, exploits situations without hesitation building up a real conflict between his assistant's own morals and desire to progress. Funny and enjoyable, if not quite as cutting as it could have been.
