Brief synopsis of Abhijan

Set on the Bihar-Bengal border, where Marwari businessmen and Rajputs of warrior caste have both settled. The central character of Narsingh (Soumitra Chatterjee), is a disillusioned, frequently drunken Rajput reduced in status to an ill-educated taxi driver. Proud and hot-tempered, with a passion for his 1930s Chrysler, Narsingh is offered work transporting tins of ghee for Sukhanram, a shady merchant, and finds himself drawn against his better judgement into trafficking opium. Having failed in everything honest, he has to decide whether or not he will engage in criminal activity to make money.

Great movie...

One big mistake: This, along with most Satyajit Ray movies are in Bangla/Bengali, NOT in Hindi. So please correct that bit of information :=)

This was my first Ray film, and it amazed me. Having grown up watching Indian films in my childhood, I thought there were very few artistic directors in India. How I was wrong? This is not the greatest film ever made, but it is very good. It is full of elements and techniques used today in artistic direction.

Wonderful cinema in the old style. Some people say that singing and dancing has always existed in Indian movies but it's not true. Many films of this period did not, especially Ray's. So if you don't need a song and dance to follow the story and enjoy slow paced films where you get enough time to absorb what is being said, then this could be a film for you. Also, please do change the info. here that this movie is in Hindi. It is not so it will be very disappointing to someone looking forward to a Hindi movie. The movie is in Bengali and the English sub-titles are not the best quality. But like many of Ray's films, so much is said with a facial expression and a glance that the words are not the most important part of the film.
