Brief synopsis of G.B.H.

Alan Bleasdale’s GBH is an epic, darkly humorous story of power, corruption and madness played out in the conflict between the enigmatic politician, Michael Murray (Robert Lindsay) and his nemesis, schoolteacher Jim Nelson (Michael Palin). Nelson accidentally defies a Murray-inspired 24-hour strike and inadvertently steals the limelight when it is picked up by the press. While Murray seeks revenge in what is initially a one-sided fight we slowly discover the secrets in his past that will cause his carefully constructed world to unravel. Then, when the pressure of public life and power games start getting on top of him, a beautiful woman arrives on the scene…

Rated - 5 starsIt Doesn't Get Better...

For anyone who remembers this the first time round, watching it a second time is even better. If you haven't seen it, but remember the Hatton Liverpool years, this series will strike more than a few chords.

Robert Lindsay is on excellent form as the self-obsessed leader of the council; but it is Michael Palin who steals the show with an understated and perfectly-pitched performance of the headmaster fighting to stay true to his socialist ideals, whilst those around him use the Labour Party as their own personal horn of plenty.

Alan Bleasdale is, of course, one of the best writers that this country has ever produced. For me, G.B.H. is his masterstroke; it is the yardstick by which all other serious TV writing can be measured. As each disc arrived in the post, we put it on and watched both episodes in one sitting. It then went straight back in the post in order that we may get the next one as soon as possible.

If you enjoy this, allow me to recommend Life On Mars - another excellent TV series.

Rated - 5 starsFantastic

This series is one of the best ever made. Robert Lindsay's performance is quite simply breathtaking. He starts out as a bully, but slowly as he breaks down we learn about him and start to sympathise with and understand him. Although this has dated slightly, and is definately pre the New Labour project, it reveals some of a world which is still familiar.

Brilliantly written and acted, GBH is moving, funny and thought provoking.

Rated - 5 starsBritish politics, British humour

For anyone interested in the legacy of Thatcherism and militant Socialism in the UK and the human repercussions, watch this series. It's well observed, funny, dark and should be compulsory viewing. Highly recommended.

Rated - 5 starsAt Long Last

One of the best TV drama's ever, released on DVD at long last. The only question is 'what took so long?' this should have been released years ago.
