Brief synopsis of Shackleton

One of the most amazing and compelling adventure stories of all time, Ernest Shackleton's 1915 expedition to the previously unexplored, forbidding land of Antarctica has been a subject of great public fascination for decades. With 27 crew members, the intrepid man became trapped in the icey land after his ship, the Endurance, sank into the Weddell Sea. Oscar-winning actor Kenneth Branagh plays the complicated and fearless explorer. The dramatic story is based on excerpts from Shackleton's own diaries, as well as accounts from some of his crew members.

Very good film, It was visually stunning and held our interest throughout the 3 and a half hours. One point to note is that Part 2 follows part 1 at the end of the DVD. When the Part 1 credits came on, I was cursing roundly , thinking I would have to order part 2 separately

Good storyline. A little slow in places, but overall very enjoyable - perfect viewing for all the family.

Rated - 2 starspoorly paced and Branagh is a little overbearing

More than half the long film is the build up to the expedition, a bit much for my taste. Very little time is spent on the ice, which was the part I was most interested to see. Branagh does capture some of the complexity of leadership, but he doesn't fit my impression of Shackleton at all. Otherwise, the casting is good and Matt Day steals the show as Frank Hurley. A great story and some well-filmed icescapes, but I would only recommend the movie to exploration enthusiasts.

A superb account of Shackleton's attempt to cross Antarctica. Beautifully filmed and well written, it doesn't feel like 4 hours at all. This is a real gem!
