Brief synopsis of Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King

The Dragon Quest franchise is very much a national treasure in its native Japan. As of April 2006, it's been around for approximately 20 years and has nearly 30 instalments under its belt. It is also the biggest-selling PS2 game ever in Japan and was at the forefront of RPG technology for the console platform.

Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King is the first fully 3D instalment in the much-loved RPG series. The game is a beautifully rendered and colourful adventure that will have fans begging for more. There is a fully orchestral soundtrack, improved animations and new battle abilities available to enjoy.

After an evil jester called Dhoulmagus seized a legendary sceptre, he used it to cast a spell on the castle from where he took it. This turned King Trode into a troll-like creature, his daughter Princess Medea into a horse, and his subjects into brambles. The kingdom was also frozen in time. You play one of the King's guards who was the only person to survive the terrible event. You set off with King Trode, Princess Medea and a reformed bandit named Yangus to track down the nasty jester. He is now a complete madman, roaming the kingdom, and killing anyone he comes across. Two other characters, named Jessica and Angelo, join your group united by the common goal of bringing Dhoulmagus to justice.

Fans of the series will recognise the beautifully coherent style of the DQ game play. There has not been a console version of the Dragon Quest series since Dragon Quest 8 was released in Japan. This updated and reworked master piece is not only is this a brilliantly fun and long lasting game but the cell-shading art work formulated by Dragonball Artist Akira Toriyama in stunning. This game has lasting appeal and will leave new players to the series ask for more whilst reassuring fans that what they have waited for was worth it.

A mysterious jester has stolen a magical sceptre from King Trodes castle which unleashes a curse turning King Trode into a frog like creature and Princess Medea into a horse. You are the silent adventurer assigned catch the evil Jester and return normality to King Trodes Kingdom. Aided by a ex-thief, Yangus and 2 more companions that you meet later in the game as the story unfolds.

This game is amazing in terms a graphics and presentation. The game plays from a 3rd person view. The world map is beatiful and vast and I have often found myself switching to 1st person view to check the scenery out. Towns are just as picturesque with plenty to do as people react differently to you depending on if it is day or night. Also, enemies are more pwerful at night time.

The combat in the game is standard turn-based action but is by no means easy. I have found myself dying numerous times on the world map. Some enemies will even call for back up and bring more enemies to the battle. There are some quirky moments in combat. For example, you come up against evil cats who will waste a turn of the battle by cleaning themselves.

The world map is huge and you can easily get lost if you do not stick to the paths (until you obtain the world map later in your quest). Once you have the world map then there is plenty of exploring to be done and hidden treasures to find.

I have been playing this title for about 15 hours now and I know theres still plenty of story left to get through.

This game is a must for fans of the series and general RPG fans. Rent it first if you don't believe me!!

Rated - 5 starsVery Pleasantly Suprised

Being a huge final fantasy fan I always take other RPG's with a pinch of salt even if they are created by the same company (in this case square enix) as they never seem to live up to the same quality.

This has drastically changed my opinion. Although not quite getting to the same dizzy heights as FFX (the best RPG ever made, in my opinion) this game certainly gives all the other FF games in the series a run for their money.

Stunning graphics and rousing music are order of the day and to say the game is massive is an understatement. I am just over half way through and have reached the 36 hour mark.

Loads of mini-games, boss battles, levelling up, mastering weapons / skills and a new feature the alchemy pot where you can mix a vast array of items to get much more powerful weapons and armour.

If you want something to keep you out of trouble till the next FF game comes out (at this rate could be next century) then this game will do very nicely indeed. Just be prepared to chuck any social commitments out of the window for the next few months.

He kept dying and having to go back to the beginning but wanted to buy the game after renting it. Great animation and not gorey despite having to kill things to progress.
