Brief synopsis of Airport

One of the original 'disaster' movies, this all-star nail-biter follows a series of emergencies at a large Midwestern airport on a snowy night. The weather's bad enough, but then a passenger threatens to blow up an inbound plane. Based on Arthur Hailey's novel. Sequels include Airport 1975, Airport '77 and The Concorde - Airport '79 and dozens of other catastrophe epics built from the same blueprint. Academy Award Nominations: 10, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress--Helen Hayes.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

After Airplane!, it's almost impossible to keep a straight face through this sprawling disaster movie, particularly since it features George Kennedy, who went on to specialise in sending up the sort of role he plays here, most memorably in the Naked Gun series. But he and the rest of the starry cast (including Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin and an Oscar-winning Helen Hayes) are commendably serious throughout. The result is competent, soapy entertainment.

Glossy, undeniably entertaining, all-star version of a popular novel, with cardboard characters skilfully deployed in Hollywood's very best style.

The aircraft used (Boeing 707-349C delivered June 21, 1966)in this film sadly, on March 21, 1989, crashed while making a final approach at S?o Paulo-Guarulhos Airport. The three occupants of this freight flight, plus 18 people on the ground died.

Rated - 3 starsDecent film, good to kill an evening

A customer from Scotland , 23/07/2004

This is the original Airport film. Based on the Arthur Hailey book of the same name, the film is fairly close to the book which in my mind makes it better than many.

The story is based in one airport during a weekend. The plot is woven through a number of characters including the airport manager, a pilot, a stewardess, and some members of the public. All contribute to a multi-layer story.

I sometimes found the style of the film distracting (the use of split-screen was apparently quite fashionable at that point) but it didn't spoil the fast-moving plot. And as with all Arthur Hailey stories, being a lead character is no guarantee you'll make it unscathed!

So if you like airport drama, or simply want to see where films like Airplane! got their material - here you go.

Rated - 2 starsIt's a complete disaster

MUFFINMAN from woking , 09/03/2005

This was the daddy of the disaster genre, a genre that was been parodied so accurately, that it is now impossible to take this film seriously. But why should you want to, anyway? With a ridiculous plot, terrifically BAD acting, and George Kennedy, of course, this is a HOOT.

Put your feet up, let your hangover dissipate to an outrageous feast of pure ham.

A good all round suspense film. If you liked airplane then this is your more serious version! Based in an airport at christmas this film focuses on all aspects of airport life, tragedy in the skies and huge problems on the ground. All in all not a bad film if you like the oldies.
