Brief synopsis of M.A.S.H.

Widely considered to be one of the best comedies ever made. The story focusses on surgeons during the Korean War and their madcap antics to degrade the U.S. military bureaucracy. A Best Screenplay Oscar went to Ring Lardner Jr.

Rated - 3 starsfilm good bonus no

not as endearing as the tv show but non the less a good film, don't bother with the bonus disc which follows many a dvd 'extra' plot of overally long and boring interviews with this, that and the other...especially as it counts towards a rental???

Rated - 5 starsMASH can only be described in one word; chaotic.

Nathanael from West Midlands , 04/04/2004

From start to finish there is a tangible air of chaos and uncertainty on screen which captures perfectly the natural state of war.

Even in their quiet moments, the characters are never far from the chaos and insanity which ingrains itself into every aspect of their lives.

This film is an extremely humorous take on American military life in the days of the draft, and despite the setting being the Korean war, the comments made are aimed obviously at the insanity of Vietnam.

The dialogue may take some getting used to, the multitude of overlapping events happening simultaneously on screen may confuse you, but that’s the way it should be.

This film (as with all Altman movies) is all about atmosphere, and there is no better example of Altman’s atmosphere at work than this.

Rated - 5 starsNostalgic

I remember when this was showing at every cinema in town and I could not afford either the time nor the money to go to see it. I have waited all these years and though it shows its age I enjoyed watching the film for the first time. In 1951 I was in Pusan for a couple of days taking troops out to be rammed into the front line. The whole bit of Korea I saw had a strange feel to it, (We were losing) but things turned around, we won (I think) and I picked up from the film the feeling of a country winning a war they had no idea what it was about. Very nostalgic for me.....

Rated - 5 starsOne of Altman's finest

Tinderbox from England , 03/07/2004

MASH's influence has been so far-reaching that it seems almost tame by today's standards. Released in 1970, it centres around a group of charismatic young military doctors who refuse to abide by the rules laid by institutions fighting an insane war (the Korean War, to be accurate, but Vietnam was stamped all over it).

We may be used to counter-culture, having enjoyed it in everything from Stripes to Police Academy, but MASH is the first and best film of its kind. The humour is zany and bawdy, but the dark undertones mean that the team is never far from a bloody corpse.

Altman's desire to keep everything improvised and spontaneous, while at the same time retaining an air of controlled satire, brings the best out of Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould and all the other actors. It may not have exactly the same resonance that it once did (although American foreign policy hasn't changed all that much) but MASH is still an exceptional film, enjoyable and thought-provoking in equal measure.

Rated - 5 starstimeless comedy

Fabulous fun! MASH is a timeless work of art that has you laughing for days after. It finishes with as much simplicity as it begins... you want it to continue forever. A refreshing contrast to our current desire for hard edge, fast and furious drama. Totally recommended.
