Brief synopsis of Clockwise

John Cleese stars in this delightful comedy as Brian Stimpson, the headmaster of a British high school whose obsession with punctuality is a source of humour for his students and joy for himself. The timely Stimpson has been elected the chairman of a conference of headmasters from posh schools--a high honor. To give his keynote address, Stimpson must travel all the way to Norwich. However, when a semantic misunderstanding sends Stimpson in the wrong direction, he begins a journey that not only finds him racing against time, but also avoiding the police, losing his speech and clothes, destroying a pay phone, and generally railing against a society that seems intent on forcing him to be late for the most important day of his life. Written to perfection by Michael Frayn (NOISES OFF), CLOCKWISE features a pitch-perfect performance by Cleese that makes this one of his funniest non-MONTY PYTHON outings.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In this madcap comedy, John Cleese plays a headmaster with a mania for punctuality who has to travel to Norwich for a conference. Unfortunately, he boards the wrong train, resulting in an increasingly frenzied cross-country dash with a schoolgirl and a former girlfriend in tow. Cleese finds it difficult to be unfunny, and he unravels here much like Basil Fawlty, from a simmering starting point to a climax of epic proportions. Perhaps because of Cleese's background in TV comedy, the picture, written by Michael Frayn, is less a narrative than a series of sketches, plus some rather awkwardly placed propaganda about public and private education in that far-off land called Mrs Thatcher's Britain. Cleese refined his cinema technique two years later with A Fish Called Wanda and this film doesn't stand comparison, but it still makes for entertaining late-night fare.

Rated - 4 starsA definite for Fawlty fans!

Great to see this on DVD, I've loved this film for years. A treat for fans of Basil Fawlty as there are a few "Basil" moments, but what makes the film for me are the cameos from a host of people including Tony Haygarth as the dry wit farmer and Joan Hickson as she witters on about the sherry glasses.

Brit comedy at its best.

This was a real side spliting movie. We watched this on New Years Eve with a chinese takeaway and had a great evening. We never stopped laughing from beginning until the end.

This was a great vehicle for Cleese! If your a fan (and of a certain age!) you will love it.

I would imagine that if you are too young to remember Fawlty Towers or Python then you might struggle with the more subtle irony in the film also it is very dated now...never the less it's still british humour at it's best proving to the rest of the world that a film can be funny without bad language, nudity or violence!

...Brilliant!
