Rated - 5 starsRoddenberry's masterpiece?

The only problems I ever had with Trek is that it assumed that Earth would be the centre of any galactic collective and that the future would be perfect. Also the aliens introduced were always invincible in the beginning ( The Borg, The Jem'Hadar etc) but ended up as whipping boys. With Andromeda Roddenberry has revealed his darker vision of the future. Earth is not the cente of the universe and the good guys lose as many as they win. What raises Andromeda above the general standard is the script and the acting.

Kevin Sorbo is that most endearing of characters, a flawed hero. His performance lays the ghost of hercules to rest permanently. All the main characters interact flawlessly with each other but there is always that air of mistrust that prevents the series from becoming too cosy and insular.

The pilot episodes are possibly the best pilot shows I've ever seen and, unusually for any show, rate among the best episodes of the series as a whole.

The only gripe I have is that the extras are only average. There are some decent commentaries from Sorbo but nothing from the other cast members. Still, this is a minor thing and will not detract from an excellent sci-fi show

Rated - 3 starsThe starting point

The best of Andromeda starts on the 2nd season, but season 1 is a necessary viewing to understand the plot and the Andromeda crew.

Although season 1 is not the best display of sci-fi TV is good entertainment all the same. Start your journey here, and by the time you get to season 2 and 3 you won't want to leave!!!

An attempt by Majel Barrett (or as she now preferrs to be called Rodenberry) to leverage her late husband's name. Still, even without the baggage of being "Gene Roddenberry's Andromida" it is fair enough standard issue US sci-fi; mismatched crew with mysterious aliens on an open ended mission.

Gene Roddenbury spent most of his life trying to recreate his inspirational success with Star Trek - this is another failed attempt despite closer similarities to ST than some of his other efforts. This is far more "Waggon Train to the Stars" but falls into too many sterotypical pit trips. Having said that, you do wonder how much input he had and how much was written after his death by Nurse Chappel! <br> It's still a very attractive show with Kevin Sorbo recreating his role in Herclues (!) and some good sets. Watchable but not challenging.
