RelatedCritics ReviewsRobert Carlyle, who became a star in the space of two movies and a TV series (Trainspotting, The Full Monty and Hamish Macbeth), is seen here in modern-day preparation for his highwayman role in Plunkett and MacLeane. He plays a thief seeking a traitor in his gang following a bungled robbery. Apart from the gimmick of having the villains all wearing yellow overalls, the film is simple-mindedly clichéd and as predictable as a calendar. Nevertheless, there are terrific performances from Carlyle, Ray Winstone, Peter Vaughan and Sue Johnston, plus the novelty of Blur star Damon Albarn in an acting role, while director Antonia Bird shows that screen violence is not just a game that boys can play.
