Brief synopsis of Cactus Jack

Stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham (CANNONBALL RUN), fashioned this intricately staged slapstick Western after Road Runner cartoons. Cowboy Handsome Stranger (Arnold Schwarzeneggar) is escorting Charming Jones (Ann-Margret) to obtain a large amount of money from her father. However, they don't know that bumbling villain Cactus Jack (Kirk Douglas) has been hired to try and get the money from them in transit. The action is enhanced by the presence of several veteran character actors and comedians, including Ruth Buzzi, Foster Brooks, Jack Elam, and Paul Lynde.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This attempt at spoofing old westerns stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kirk Douglas in what sounds like a comic meeting of the two chins. Made before anyone had the wit to relaunch Arnie as a pneumatic self-parody and before Kirk realised he was surrounded by dross, this is, sadly, an example of crass comic mistiming in the extreme. It was probably conceived by Hollywood executives over a week-long lunch, who thought it might be a topping idea to reinvent the Roadrunner cartoon as a live-action romp. The small trifles that are absent include any sign of imagination or comedy or, for that matter, a director with an attention-span. At least Ann-Margret looks as striking as ever.

This is film which as far as I can see is based on the road runner cartoons. Cactus Jack (Douglas)is the wylie coyote. And Arnold plays the defender of the road runner. good for a laugh and worth a watch.

Hard to believe that this is about 25 years old, but still well worth renting. Full of cheap laughs and cartoon comedy

I appreciate this film was done toward the end of Kirk's career, darn shame, and at the start of Arnold's, good lord, but what were they thinking? This films is excellent viewing for anyone who thinks Mr Schwartzinator may make a half way decent Guv'nor of California or can pull of a decent impersonation of an actor. Tis sad to see Kirk Douglas in this film but also bloody funny too.

Rated - 4 starsThe Villian!

Excellent, I haven't seen this since it was released and I was obviously much younger. Arnie still can't act but Kirk Douglas is superb.... only just found out the proper name for this film is The Villian.

Struggles to raise a laugh - and so will you! Tries hard but is just a little too yuk! Mind you, the sight of Kirk Douglas struggling to hold his belly in during a topless scene was perhaps one of it's funniest moments. Okay if you've nothing else to watch.
