Brief synopsis of Bull Durham

The Durham Bulls are in a slump and have spent a hefty sum of money acquiring an untested young pitcher in the hopes of reversing their standings. Crash Davis, a 12-year veteran ballplayer who has spent most of his time bumming around as a minor league catcher, is assigned to mature the rookie pitching phenom named "Nuke." But a beautiful and enigmatic team groupie comes between the tutor and his student, enlightening both with her game of life, love and verse.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Director Ron Shelton has proved something of a specialist with baseball movies, having also brought Cobb to the big screen, in which Tommy Lee Jones thunders magnificently as the twisted sports star. In this winning drama, his detailed love of the sport never becomes the usual tired tale of the heart. Instead it propels a smart, witty character piece, an electric love story between Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, with Kevin Costner brooding convincingly in the wings. All three actors make the picture sizzle.

New York Times

"...A film with spring fever, a giddy, playful look at life in baseball's minor leagues....[Costner] does a lot with his role..."

Rated - 3 starsIts not all about balls

Even though I don't really know much about baseball I found this film hugely entertaining, it was a sordid story with a strong cast. Kevin Costner was at his best.

The relationship between the three central characters was realistic in its portrayal of sexual politics.

Funny, heart warming and a journey of change for the characters. Definitely one to watch.

Rated - 5 starsBaseball is still a mystery!

A customer from London , 04/08/2004

Kevin Costner has become synonymous with baseball ever since the 90's melodramatic 'Field of Dreams'. However, for a look further back at his obssession with the sport, you will not find a couple of hours better spent than indulging in 'Bull Durham'.

While the subject matter is enough to put off any true Brit, who rightly believes that baseball is the lesser cousin of rounders, the fanatacism and consuming nature of a national sport can be easily related to. For this film is about much more than just baseball.

Throw in a fun performance from a very young Tim Robbins, a superb turn from the ever delightful Susan Sarandon, and even Kevin Costner manages a decent stab at an otherwise dull character.

Funny but not laugh out loud hilarious, thought-provoking but not too serious, a truly great film.

Note: It was on the set of this film that Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon met and fell in love.

Rated - 2 starsSusan's accent is a bit off

I hired this DVD as I have never understood America's love affair with baseball and I am still none the wiser. I also hired it because I usually love Susan Sarandon but unfortunately the 'southern twang' accent she uses for this part just didn't work for me. Overall - disappointing.

I got this because I am a Costner fan and someone said that his number with Susan Sarandon was the sexiest thing. The film is a B movie, but nicely done.

Sadly I don't think Sarandon and Costner really made much music. I think they were both a bit old for a baseball movie. The younger guy played his part well.

I thought Costner said some sensible things and he managed to be about the most interesting guy in the film and it was great to see him so slim.
