Brief synopsis of Bedknobs And Broomsticks

In England during World War II, three young kids are forced to evacuate their home and move in with the eccentric Eglantine Price (Angela Lansbury). At first the youths are unhappy--until they discover that Eglantine is studying to become a witch. Eglantine teaches the children magic, using her new powers to take them on fantastic, fun-filled adventures, all of which they experience on a flying bedframe. But when the neophyte witch decides to use her powers to help the Brits win the war, will she succeed...or will she just create more havoc

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Directed by Robert Stevenson, this was a conscious effort on the part of Disney to repeat the success of Mary Poppins. Angela Lansbury is splendidly dotty as amateur witch Eglantine Price, but neither David Tomlinson nor the trio of cockney evacuees offer her much support. But then neither does the story, cobbled together from a couple of Mary Norton novels, in which the Nazi invasion of Britain is repelled by magic. The animated sequences are easily the highlights of the film, which now shows in full (for many years we had to make do with a 98-minute version that cut several of the Sherman brothers' songs).

Halliwell's Film Guide

Extraordinarily dishevelled and incompetent Disney follow-up to Mary Poppins (qv), a very muddled narrative with few high points and evidence of much cutting. Redeemed occasionally by camera trickery.

Time Out

Disney comedy about an apprentice witch in good old cutesy-pie England, helped by three kids in making a contribution... Read more on www.timeout.com

Funny, when I saw this as a kid I really enjoyed it and the animated section seemed to be most of the film.

Now, having just watched it with a 4 year old I had to explain a lot of the war related content (Who where the Nasties then?), she lost interest during the extended dancing section and the animated bit was still the best, but only lasted for a few minutes.

So, in summary - It's a bit dated really, Mary Poppins went down fine, but this one didn't keep a modern youngster's attention. But I still stand and sing along to "Bobbing along......"

Fantasic childrens entertainment.

It was when I was a kid & now I'm sitting watching it with my daughter.

If you hate the whole genre of these films get this one out & skip straight to the football match, I'll put money on it making you laugh.

I got this because it was my favourite when I was young, and after seeing for the first time in 15 years I loved it!

I watched it with my mum, even she loved it!

A great film for a rainy afternoon, full of magic, and excitement.
