With her scandalous off-screen antics escalating, Paramount's megastar, Clara Bow, had only two years to go before she would receive her exit visa from the studio, but she survived the transition to sound and here — as in It which made her famous two years earlier — she is a department store assistant, as is Jean Arthur, playing Clara's sister and, surprisingly, the bigger vamp of the two. Both girls have their sights set on James Hall. The script (adapted from a stage comedy called Love 'Em and Leave 'Em) offers some snappy one-liners as well as the attraction of the leading ladies. Edward Sutherland directed, utilising future sex symbol Jean Harlow in a bit part.

Billy Crystal plays a big time comedian, tracking his career from beginnings to waning end. The format uses constant flashbacks to the people he used and abused his way up (and down again).

Excellent character acting by the two male leads. Helen Hunt also as good as ever in a relatively minor role.

There is plenty of humour dotted around the film, but don't expect the usual full-on Billy Crystal comedy style.

Well worth renting.

Very slow storyline but somehow worth a watch. Billy Crystal is not in his best role but is still better than most.

Rated - 1 starsGreat idea ruined by schmaltz

Billy Crystal is always a mixed bag- great comic but with too many sentimental tendencies that get in the way of his better ideas. This is the classic example: what could have been a hilarious and insightful exploration into the history of Jewish comedy becomes a manipulative and overdosing on Hallmark cards picture, with great performances but too much sugar.
