Brief synopsis of Mimic

When a cockroach-spread plague threatens to decimate the child population of New York City, evolutionary biologist Susan Tyler and her research associates rig up a species of "Judas" bugs and introduce them into the environment, where they will "mimic" the diseased roaches and infiltrate their grubby habitats. So far so good...until the bugs keep on evolving and learn to mimic their next prey--humans. Noirish, dazzling production work ensconces reliably creepy bug-related thrills. Based on the short story by Donald A. Wolheim.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In the same vein as The Relic and all those other movies about creepy-crawlies that go crunch in the night, this horror movie stars Mira Sorvino as an entomologist determined to find out exactly what has invaded the New York subway system. It's preposterous stuff, but the tale of oversized insects (a genetically enhanced species developed to eradicate an epidemic-spreading breed of cockroaches) is suitably gruesome and atmospheric thanks to Cronos director Guillermo del Toro's dark direction. Sorvino is believably tough, too, and smartly supported by Jeremy Northam, Charles S Dutton and Josh Brolin as potential monster munchies.

Effective and atmospheric horror movie, with much of the action taking place in subway tunnels; its visual style creates unease without resorting to shock effects.

Los Angeles Times

"...Del Toro is an expert at the ominous, using a striking visual sense to drench his films with an atmosphere suffocatingly thick with undefined menace..."

Guillermo del Toro sure likes things in jars and insect's... and Mimic is no exception. Really enjoyed this, not my fave del Toro movie but good on the suspense front with strong acting from everyone. Not something you'd watch over and over but good if you like dark suspense filled movies.

Rated - 3 starsSolid Del Toro

Gutterboy from Sheffield , 09/11/2007

Guillermo Del Toro is arguably the best director working in the world at the moment and

Pan's Labyrinth is certainly one of the films of the century so far.

Mimic is his first English language film and whilst it doesn't get close to any of his 3 Spanish films (Cronos and Devil's Backbone being the other two), it is certainly a solid film and a cut above most other Hollywood stuff.
