Brief synopsis of Highway

Young nihilistic Jack (Jared Leto) has a sleazy affair, bedding a woman with underworld connections. He must then flee for his life from her shady associates who are out for his blood. He joins up with his kooky buddy Pilot (Jake Gyllenhal) and the two hit the road in a beat up, but photogenic jalopy, top down. Their destination is Seattle, but they do make some pit stops along the way where they encounter a gaggle of freaks and hitmen as well as Cassie (Selma Blair), a sexy drifter who joins them in their quest. Reaching their northwest shangri-la, they come across a vigil for the recently departed rock icon Kurt Cobain.
A wild road picture about mortality and the paths of fate and destiny, HIGHWAY moves to the beat of the nineties grunge scene in both attitude and its musical pacing. Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes contributes the original score.

Rated - 4 starsBrilliant little road movie...

Melisa Tupou from Harrow, UK , 22/03/2006

It shouldn't have worked...a typical American road movie involving two druggie, low-life youths that have to flee the 'safety' of the place they grew up in because of the foolish actions of one, and they have some adventures along the way and grow up...but this movie totally ROCKED!!!

Leto and Gyllenhaal are absolutely fantastic as the disillusioned youth smoking their lives away in dead-end jobs in Vegas...their dispair manifests itself differently in the two - Leto's character fools around with anything that moves, adn Gyllenhaal's character is in a permenant chemical haze. When the going gets tough...thanks to a small time mobster's unfaithful wife...the boys hit the highway.

It's on the highway that the boys long term friendship is examined and re-invited...without giving anything away...it's the little moments between the boys that really makes this film. Their shared history...the 'in-jokes'...the absolute trust they have in each other makes this a cut above your usual buddy film.

The supporting cast is great...the flashback scenes are a nice touch and the soundtrack rocks....it manages to capture the mood of the moment brilliantly.

If you are looking for something a little different from a tired old theme...or you need proof of Leto and Gyllenhaal's talent...then get this out.

Rated - 4 starsJake Gyllenhaal & Jared Leto are supoib

Fun road movie comedy about a couple of Gen-x'ers who have to hit the road after Leto's poolboy is caught having sex with the wife of a Vegas Gangster. His heavies are set to hunt him down and smash his feet.

They hightail it to Seattle as Gyllenhaal's 'Pilot' (named after his father) is trying to locate a lost love. The film is set in the same week as Kurt Cobain's suicide and they end up at his memorial. Along the way they meet Aligator Boy, a wired drughead - Johnny the Fox (Dr. Cox from Scrubs), a bunch of hookers, tree-huggin acid lovin hippies and love interest Selma Blair.

Gyllenhaal does stoned better than anyone and Leto is great as the dopey waster, both excellent caricatures of generation-x and grunge style.

I really like the cast but this was a very very poor film. Really lazy storytelling and lots of wasted talent added up to a dull ride.
