Brief synopsis of Playing God

Drug-addled former surgeon Eugene Sands, languishing on skid row, attracts the attention of an underworld kingpin after performing impromptu surgery on a gunshot victim with bartender's utensils. Thereafter, Sands unwillingly becomes the kingpin's emergency medic of choice and soon finds himself over his head--and dangerously in love with the big boss' beautiful girlfriend.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

David Duchovny didn't go for the easy option when accepting his first post-X Files big-screen role, and despite his OK performance the movie itself is only a qualified success. Playing against type, Duchovny stars as a disgraced surgeon with a drug habit who becomes unofficial physician to slimy mobster Timothy Hutton and his gang. As he tries to wriggle out of the job, he finds himself caught between the FBI and the increasingly paranoid gangster. Both Hutton and Peter Stormare as an underworld rival are flamboyantly over the top, while Angelina Jolie supplies the glamour. The plot is ridiculously far-fetched while the direction from British TV's Andy Wilson is slick but a touch erratic.

I read the review (placed above this this one) and expected this film to be a bit naff, but being a Jolie fan I rented it anyway. I was very impressed with this film, good story line, good acting, the occasional humour. All I can say is the person who wrote the review before me must like films with 'sunglasses & black leather jackets'. This ones worth renting in my opinion but its definately a thinking persons film.

The story line is very interesting, but it does drag a bit. Good for watching when bored but I would not make an effort to watch it. David Duchovny is good still seems like Mulder though, good watch for Duchovny fans.

this is the second time I've tried to finish this film and both times I've failed.

the selection of actors is excellent but the film is poorly cast. the pacing of the film is off and the script mediocre.

this movie is not worth your time.
