Brief synopsis of John Woo Presents - Stranglehold

Acclaimed action director John Woo presents Stranglehold, a stunning 3rd-person action adventure videogame. A "spiritual sequel" to Woo's action masterpiece, "Hard Boiled," Stranglehold redefines the action gaming experience with its acrobatic gunplay, thrilling cinematography, frenetic combat and incredible Massive Destructibility (Massive D). Chow Yun-Fat reprises his signature role as Inspector Tequila, pitting gamers as a take no-prisoners cop waging a personal war with Hong Kong crime lords. Tequila's loyalties to the force are tested when his ex-wife is kidnapped by the Russian mob in Chicago. Tequila struggles to balance his duty to uphold the law with doing what it takes to save his family.

Saving the best for last is a phrase often attributed to romance, and if you pardon the pun, John Woo's Stranglehold did its best to win me over in my last appointment of this year's E3 conference in Los Angeles. Fans of Hard-Boiled, Face Off or The Killer were promised a game experience to rival the cult appeal of those movies. Described by the overexcited US Midway rep as an interactive John Woo entertainment experience (we call them games here), you control the likeness of Chow Yun-Fat in what has to be described as the most explosive game I've ever seen.

Rated - 2 starsA gaming step backwards

Okay the first the good - Graphics are pretty sharp and and the special moves wil keep you amused for half an hour.

But now the bad - this is supposed to be next gen gaming, I was playing similar style games to this on my Amstrad CPC 464 20 years ago!!! the idea of running into a room, kill endlessly spawing bad guys and then shoot end of level bad guy 3000 times really does not spell out any kind of inovation at all does it!! This is a very poor game.

The Tequila character is limited in his moves, with the only real freedom coming from the left trigger which allows you to jump off walls (pointlessly!) or on to bannisters and trollies which will start slow mo.

Anyone who thinks this game is great really needs to ask them selves why they bought a next gen machine - as they would have obviously been happy with an etch a sketch.

I have to say sorry for having this game for so long, i liked it. For me it was good at the beginning got bit boring in the middle and then got better towards the end. If you have Xbox live, i would download the demo and if you like that you will like the full game. Its great fun trying to find different ways to kill people. When i played it online in multiplayer it was good but there was not many people playing it online, most people are playing Gears of War and Halo 3 online. I would say its worth renting.

Rated - 4 starsClass Game

Its great shooter kind of max payne/time crisis but far more advanced and on new age consoles. It is the first of its kind and i hope not the last. Genis gaming, typical farfetched story line though. But as i said 'class game'!
