Brief synopsis of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam

Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is a fresh approach to skateboarding games, concentrating on a return to the downhill levels of the first Tony Hawk game. Take your skater to one of over 90 events in eight locations around the world and race those downhill courses. Speed is the key in this game; the tricks are secondary, as you must win the race to progress. The change in emphasis from the more traditional Tony Hawk games combined with the Wii's unique controller creates an entirely new game. No longer are you worrying about where to find the next quarter pipe so you can get some air, you are just blasting down the course, busting tricks as you go in order to earn boost to go even faster!

Another change in the approach of Downhill Jam is in the removal of almost all of the licensed skaters. Only Tony himself remains, the likes of Mullen and Margera replaced with more extravagant, almost cartoon-like characters. As with the other games, you can still make use of the Create-a-skater tool to make your own skating hero to guide through the game. You also have access to a wide variety of different types of skateboards, from fishtails and long-boards to today's high-tech decks. Each type of board will affect the way the game plays; some boards are built for speed and some are more suited to tricks and manoeuvring. And you will have to a lot of manoeuvring, as the courses you are racing down are not empty. There are vehicles and pedestrians to avoid in addition to the other skaters, and there are objects and scenery to crash through and shortcuts to find. You can even knock down your opponents to get ahead.

With both single and multi-player modes, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam has all the right ingredients to make a really fun game. If you like the other games in the series, and if you like snowboarding games like SSX, this is the game for you.

I read the reviews before i rented this game and i was a bit skeptical, although it does say what it's going to be about in the name of the game 'Downhill Jam'. I've played the game for a few hours now and i would recommend it, it's brilliant.

Yes it is mainly racing, but mixed in with loads of tricks, fights etc.

It's unlike the other tony hawks, but it is still a top quality game.

Rated - 4 starsNot a typical Tony Hawk game but...

This is a fun little racer which has you competing in various downhill courses. Sometimes you have to race others, other times you have to skate through slalom gates, other times you have to do as many tricks as possible... yes, it's not like others in the series but in a way that's good - if I wanted Pro Skater number 160000 I'd play one of the older games. My main gripe is with the control scheme; the Wii remote held sideways wasn't meant for the frantic button-pushing fests that a high trick score requires and some sessions playing this really left my hands sore.

If you like ssx then this is for you, you play as a downhill skateboarder, some levels are just speed, others are tricks and others have twists. But if you want a tony hawk original explore the school yard doing tricks and collecting items then this aint it.

good game and good idea, but can get a little borring after the seventh time going down hill on the same circuit.... worth a play i supose.... but only if you you want a change from the original.

I am rating this one for my ten year old son. He could not stop playing this game and was reallly enjoying it. I do not understand why, however he thought it was rather cool! However, my six year old son could not cope with all the controls!!!

Rated - 3 starsA bit of fun

Basically this is just racing downhill on a skateboard. Having played Tony Hawk's games before I was expecting something different. I was a little disappointed at first as doing tricks (surely the point of these games) meant you lost some races. But after a while I got more into it (also got to grips with the sensitive controls) and some of the races require tricks. I wouldn't buy the game personally but if you get previous Tony Hawk's games out of your mind it is actually a decent game. Worth renting to make your own mind up.
