Brief synopsis of Need For Speed: Carbon

NFS: Carbon takes you by the scruff of the neck and throws you straight into the world's most dangerous and ferocious form of street racing. With over 50 real-world licensed cars, including the Mazda RX-8, BMW M3 GTR Street, Dodge Viper SRT10 and Lamborghini Murcielago, there should enough to keep even the most jaded petrolhead happy.

The game is the first in the series where you can build a crew and race in all-out urban warfare for your city against rival crews and opposing car classes. There are three different car classes to choose from - Tuner, American Muscle and Exotic. Need For Speed: Carbon uses an all-new physics model that makes each car handle and drive differently.

You must risk life and limb in order to take over rival turfs, one street at a time. As the game progresses, the police will turn up the heat, forcing races to Carbon Canyon, which is on the outskirts of the city. Each member of your crew has unique skills that you can trigger by simply pressing a button. A Scout will lead you to shortcuts on the track and a Blocker will - you guessed it - block, which will hopefully slow down other racers.

You can let your creative juices flow when designing your crew's cars with the new Autoscuplt car customisation tool that lets you design and morph your car in every way imaginable. It is also possible to tune every car to your heart's desire, which will no doubt lead to absolute mayhem on the roads.

So, what are you waiting for? The race has just begun

Rated - 5 starsInconcevibly perfect!

This game is tricky to begin with, it took me a good 2 hours to get a hang of the control method and the game play.

If you can get past that its is utterly fantastic.

The plot is fairly poor, but the gameplay is completely engrossing.

Win races to gain money to buy cars. Then tune the engines, alter the body work in every possable detail to make your perfect car.

There are also quick races and challenge races outside of the 'career mode' main game.

NB, you can change the control set up from the options menu- use the wii-mote as a stearing wheel or as the accelerator and the nunchuck as the handbrake and stearing wheel.

You will want to buy this! 5 stars.

Rated - 2 starsNeed For Decent Control

Gedzilla from Hove , 07/07/2008

What could have been an incredible game is ruined by sluggish and inconsistent controls. Now, I understand that control between cars change, but when controls change for different races, I tend to stick two fingers up at the game. The graphics are amazing, the story (although dumb as hell) is engaging and the police chases are truly exciting, but one thing I do expect from driving games is the ability to turn corners. I spent the weekend trying to figure out how to drift around the corners, but only ever felt as in control as a five year old trying to wrestle with a fireman's hose. And then I entered a drift race and the car i was using suddenly appeared able to drift with no effort, but still no control. I like my games to be easy to learn but hard to master. This title was just v-e-r-y frustrating. I even tried different combinations when souping up different cars (which in itself was quite satisfying), but to no avail. Perhaps the problem is that you don't get any instructions with games that you rent, but I did try all the different control options. If someone tells me that they're great at drifting (and how they do it!) I might give this game another go - it really does have a lot going for it. Otherwise, i wouldn't recommend this to a raving masochist for fear that it might be just a little too painful for them...

Rated - 2 starsOK, nothing new

kingcanute from Hyde [Highly rated reviewer] , 12/01/2008

Game plays fine, same as in all other formats. Nothing new brought to the game by Wii controls, although they handle the car fine. 2 player plays well, but if you have played this type of game before, it's a case of 'same as it ever was'....

Rated - 2 starsDidn't much like it either

A customer from UK , 28/01/2008

It was ok I suppose. I found the nunchuk control too sensitive so had to use just the remote for steering.

But just felt like I was playing a standard driving game. Same old stuff.
