Brief synopsis of Okami

The Goddess Amaterasu, reborn as a white wolf, has a mission to rid medieval Japan of a demonic curse that's swept across the nation. With the help of a pint-sized creature named Issun and your trusty paint brush it's your chance to defeat evil in the form of a massive eight-headed serpent that was killed 100 years ago and has been reborn.

Rated - 5 starsBest game I've played in a long, long time

I agree with the other reviewer this game is amazing. The graphics are lush, music is traditional Japanenese fare with lots of banging drums and the gameplay is so addictive its one of the few games I have to dip into everyday without fail.

Not sure how this game can be completed in 24 hours as I'm up to the 32 hour mark and I'm only half way through. To note without giving away any spoilers this game is split into two parts and I completed the first part within 20 hours.

Once you get into it you do not want it to finish.........Absolute Class!!!!!

Quite brilliant, with substance enough to live up to its stunning visuals. Peaceful, elegant, you'll play it for hours. The most beautiful game on PS2.

Rated - 5 starsPS2's finest hour

matt a from Lincoln , 22/07/2007

Well, I can't really add much more than what the other reviewers have said, this game is simply fantastic. The only tiny critcism is I didn't find it quite difficult enough, had the damage system been tweaked a bit for a harder game I think it would be even better.

Having said that, this doesn't really detract from the experience, and will probably enhance it for some people. For the most part things are quite leisurely, the puzzle difficulty is perfectly pitched and the game is so long anyway you won't worry about the fact you kind of cruise through it. Visually, sonically and narratively, Okami is outstanding and genuinely revived my love for my PS2. I can't wait for Sony's currently useless successor to start producing games with this level of originality, ingenuiety and majesty in about 5 years time.

Okami is one of the finest PS2 games out there. It's an action-adventure game set in medieval Japan which is deeply steeped in Japanese mythology. I found this fascinating since it wasn't something I'd been exposed to before playing the game. The player takes the role of Amaterasu the Sun Goddess, who has taken the form of a white wolf. She travels across Japan restoring the world one dead tree at a time, taking on the usual video game succession of dark lords and demons.

One of the game's unique features is the ability to use brush powers - this may be drawing a line to cut a rope/slash an enemy, drawing a circle to make the sun appear and many others. These form the majority of puzzles and the game never lets you go long before you get a new power.

Apart from bosses you enter into fights by bumping into devil scrolls which wander the game's areas, which causes a small area to be sealed off until you kill the offending bosses. Combat is fluid and you soon develop a powerful arsenal which means it never becomes a chore. It's also easy to avoid fights which is good if you just want to go from A to B. However like me you'll probably run into the first fight you can once getting a new move just to try it out because the combination of the fighting mechanics with the brush powers is great fun. Generally the difficulty is well pitched and as long as you make sure to keep a good stock of healing items in reserve you shouldn't have many problems.

The game is visually stunning, its more beautiful than any PS3/Xbox 360 game out there. When you restore an area and see the ruined landscape blossom into life you get a real sense of saving the world which I've found missing from games like Zelda Twilight Princess. The dialogue is great with plenty of memorable characters and a surprising amount of innuendo. Don't mistake this for a kid's game just because of the way it looks.

It took me 24 hours to complete this game but it could take twice as long if you took the time to track down all the secrets hidden in the game world. If you rent one PS2 game make it this one!
