Brief synopsis of Spider-Man 3

It wouldn't be a big, splashy, blockbuster film release without the obligatory game tie-in, would it? Spider-Man 3 is no exception. The good news is that where movie licenses generally have a reputation for lazy development, games based on the Spider-man films have a reputation for quality and good, wholesome fun.

While Activision's promising fun this time around, we can't promise that it'll necessarily be wholesome. Spider-Man 3 marks the appearance of the black costume. If you don't speak nerd, the black costume is a symbiotic life form that enhances Spidey's speed, strength and agility. The bad news is that it has some rather nasty effects on his personality, making him frankly a bit of a dick.

Don't worry though. The unveiling of Spidey's dark side doesn't mean you'll be playing through hours of him fighting his inner demons and emotional turmoil, oh no. As well as the film's villains, the Sandman, the Hobgoblin and Venom, you'll take on Spidey classics such as The Scorpion, The Lizard, The Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter and more.

Rated - 4 starsGreat for spidey fans and rental.

I thought the game was great for a week of play, enough time to pick up the majority of achievements from the story villans and several extras from swinging around the city fighting crime as it happens.

There are many fun extras that vary the game. bomb disposal which gives you varied puzzles and some button mashing. Races which are more or less self explanatory except for the tricks you sometimes have to do. Skydiving games which is hard to understand and control, at least for me. And there's also combat tours which involves swinging from place to place disposing of increasingly difficult gangs of enemies.

Some say the camera is a bit funky sometimes but that's only when web swinging since the camera is effected by the direction you're moving. Simply put, don't use the right analogue stick when swinging around, I don't think there is a way to control it well. The camera is a little disorientating when crawling along walls sideways or down but it's the way spiderman would see things, you get used to it after you've tried it a few times.

Most of the achievements are gained simply in the course of the story but there are many others for those that hunt a challenge. As a whole they're neither too easy or hard but don't require a lot of time in order to get them, it's more based on skill.

The action sequences are fun too, involving button combinations in order to complete feats of skill. Sometimes annoying when you fail but most repeat automatically and the others are battle finishers which hurt you if you make a mistake.

It's not a perfect game but as a movie tie in and short rental game, it's the best I've ever played.

Well worth a rent!

You can get s decent amount of gamerscore from this game by simply just completing the missions and better yet have fun along the way.

Rated - 4 starsUnderated Game

Leigh from England , 25/07/2007

This game was way too underated. I thought it was really good, Swinging through the city makes you actually feel like your Spiderman. The Graphics were pretty good if you take into notice the fact that the city is so large. It is pretty short, but it will last a while if you play in hour long bursts. I don't think I'd buy it just cos of the shortness, but definetly worth a rent. 4*

Usually Video Games of blockbuster movies like Spiderman dont live up to the hype and well, neither does this one, i can see what angle the developers have tried to take with Spiderman 3 and i like it, but i think it was all too much all too soon.

Just imagine Grand Theft Auto + Spiderman swinging from every object he can, sounds fun dont it, well it is for a few hours but then gets old quickly.

Gameplay

The overall gameplay isnt that bad, the camera view will annoy you in a matter of minutes and not hours, but swinging from building to building chasing down the villain wont get old and is really enjoyable, the combat system is repeatative and could of been done better, i can sum up the gameplay by just telling you to look at Kevin Costner's filmography 'Surely he will do a good movie, eventually' same goes with movie games, there will surely be a good one on the way sooner rather then later. 5/10

Graphics

When you look at some of the games now out for the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3, this game doesent compare but neither did i expect it to, one thing i do like about Spiderman 3 is the size of the city, it is huge and previously had never been done in this genre (off the top of my memory) with no loading screens at all which is very pleasing and makes the experience more flowing and fluid, but you come to expect that with the next generation of games.

Some areas are quite blocky and are pretty ugly to look at, but Spiderman himself moves very fluidly and never batters an eyelid no matter what you throw at him. 6.5/10

Longevity

Well i am writing this on the day i got the game in the post, does that sum it up for you, i wouldnt recommend this to my friends but neither would i tell them not to rent it either, if your a big Spiderman fan or Marvel comics fan this game will keep you going for a good while, otherwise its a week at most and you will have your fill of spiderwebs and super villians for a good while. 5/10

Rated - 2 starsNot great

This game has great potential but is let by a dreadful camera which makes the game nearly unplayable. Its ok to play for a short time before the frustration of it takes over.

Avoid!
