Brief synopsis of The Darkness

Fearless Mafia hitman Jackie Estacado is part of the Franchetti crime family helmed by vicious cousin Paulie. On the eve of his 21st birthday, Jackie is suddenly possessed by the terrifying and spectacular powers of the Darkness. Though his supernatural entity lets him wreak terrible havoc on his enemies, the Darkness also has a strong will of its own. Jackie must learn to control the Darkness that lurks within him while harnessing its power to overthrow Paulie and fulfill his destiny.

Based on the best-selling comic "The Darkness" created by Top Cow. This title features a seamless and unique blend of modern crime drama and supernatural horror with both first and third person non-linear game play. With highly destructible environments that allow you to stalk the gritty New York slums, harbors, subway tunnels and rooftops, and defeat the terrifying creatures of The Otherworld - a parallel reality where the Darkness dwells. Developed by Starbreeze - the team behind the best-selling and critically acclaimed "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay".

Rated - 0 starsOne of the worst games ever

Well I know the guy that hadn't played it gave it 5 stars, but I have played it and wouldn't give it any. I think it is truly awful. It reminds me of F.E.A.R. It tries to innovate, but actually just provides a pathetic attempt at an FPS. Firstly, the controls are poorly laid out, can't be changed much and are really unintuitive/uncomfortable (I hate Fire on R2 rather than the norm of R1). In the opening sequence you can't hear dialogue over noise. The in-game map is almost unreadable and provides no use. Enemies can be shot five times and then will get up again from behind you and shot you. An enemy will shoot you from a distance, but then ignore you when you stand in front of them.

The graphics are very poor and the flow of the game awful. Stupid and annoying cut screens play for 90% of their duration before offering a Skip screen. I had to start again when a piece of moveable environment blocked the path. If review space allowed I could go on about the faults.

Rated - 1 starsIt has nothing to do with Fall of Man!!!

A Cesar H Monte Pegado from UK [Highly rated reviewer] , 06/08/2007

The reason that I tried this game was due to a review mentioning that they had played Fall of Man and The Darkness was in the same realm....What a load of rubbish, there is no comparison what so ever! I managed to play for 30min and that was 29min too much.

It's not my kind of game and it really doesn't do the PS3 justice, but this is my opinion.

I am seriously beginning to think that xbox and nintendo have paid off the game makers to only bring out RUBBISH on the ps3 - i have had the ps3 for a year now and have only played three games that truly show the potential of the playstation (drakes fortune, ratchet & clank and oblivion - in that order) - The playstation definitely has huge potential but the games are so badly letting it down, this one included it is terrible, i played better games on the megadrive!!!!!!

There that is my rant for the day - give this game a miss its not worth turning on the console.

Rated - 4 starsGive it a chance!

Graphics: Look great on a 1080p TV. Not sure if the previous reviewer had their eyes shut? Not the greatest I've seen on the PS3 but comparable to Resistance FOM.

Sound: Is awesome on a decent AV setup. I'm running LPCM to a seperate amp and never had any issue with speech levels.

Gameplay: It takes a while to get going -- once you begin to understand what the Darkness actually is (when you change worlds and meet Anthony etc) it gets good (and quite spooky).

I also like the fact there's the smallest of puzzle elements to give you a break from shooting. Using the various Darkness powers to get unlock doors from the other side, clear paths with the Blackhole power, etc. Nice twist! Once you gain the Darkness Guns it's a constant fight to keep the area dark so you can still shoot! I don't find the Lightkillers particularly intelligent though.

Navigation: The map is poor, because they expect you to actually look around you. When you're in the subway it won't tell you on a map where your destination is -- you have to read the signs around or use the information point. I actually quite like this form of realism rather than having a map with all the key places appearing as if by magic.

All in all it's had me hooked for the weekend. The whole point of renting games is to give things a go without forking out £40. The demo on PS3 doesn't show half the game (the unearthly realm etc).

Gameplay is very repetitive and actually not that challenging. I got fed up with this game after 3 days and returned it. There are many excellent FPS games out there for the PS3 - this isn't one of them.

After playing Half Life 2 (again) and Half Life 2 Episode 2, this had a lot to live upto. And it was a reasonable enough game. The controls are real easy and the story line was quite innovative, but a bit of the time i was imply running around looking for things to do. But some good points are that some time it scares the crap out of you which kept me awake from running round all the time.

Try and rent, possibly buy...
