Brief synopsis of The Mouse That Roared

In Jack Arnold's satirical film, the world's smallest country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, keeps its economy afloat by exporting their wine, Pinot Grand Fenwick, to America. When the state of California bottles a cheaper version, Pinot Grand Enwick, bankruptcy looms for the tiny Duchy, so it decides to wage war against America in order to lose and collect foreign aid. As with many of his films, the great Peter Sellers adroitly plays three different roles.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Adapted from Leonard Wibberley's novel The Wrath of Grapes, this wry little comedy opens brightly, but quickly loses direction as its one joke is stretched to breaking point. The idea of a tiny country declaring war on America to benefit from aid in defeat is a lovely one, but not even Peter Sellers in three widely differing roles can compensate for the longueurs that occupy the film's final hour. Jean Seberg (whose next picture — Jean-Luc Godard's A Bout de Souffle — would make her an international star) is wasted in support, along with David Kossoff and William Hartnell.

I had never heard of this film before finding it here. It was great Sellers; a little silly but sharp political satire in the vein of Dr. Strangelove. It is not quite at the level of the good Dr., but it does highlight the insanity and sometimes hilarious aspects of cold war culture, international relations and what a bunch of bumbling idiots our leaders really are.

A great British classic if you love old films. I enjoyed it even though it is older than me.

Here is a film where the supreme masters of comedy have gathered to make a wonderful movie with a great story line. It has a Hans Christian Anderson quality about the story but then, with Peter Sellers giving such magnificent performances, what else could be expected.

A good fun satire much in the ilk of the Ealing Comedies.
