Brief synopsis of Pursuit Of Happyness, The - BLU-RAY Version

Will Smith is a father struggling to take care of his young son in this touching tale based on a true story. In San Francisco circa 1981, Chris Gardner's (Smith) luck has run out. A bad business investment, a bevy of parking tickets, and back taxes in addition to rent, childcare, and groceries keep him constantly scrambling for cash. Chris thinks his luck is changing when he is accepted into a highly competitive internship program at a brokerage firm. But the internship is unpaid and soon, despite his best efforts, Chris and his five-year old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith--Will Smith's real life son), find themselves homeless. Chris might spend his days training to invest and make millions, but he and Christopher spend their nights in shelters and public transportation stations. Gardner's story is a testament not only to the love between a father and son, but also to the strength of the human spirit. Will Smith turns in a fine, nuanced performance as a man determined to protect his son and make a life for himself and his family. Jaden Smith is an adorable scene-stealer as young Christopher. The real-life father and son pairing translates well onto the big screen; the two have terrific natural chemistry. Their affection for each other is apparent, even as they weather the tough times. This is Italian director Gabriele Muccino's (THE LAST KISS, REMEMBER ME MY LOVE) first film in the English language. Thandie Newton also stars as Christopher's overworked and defeated mother in this tearjerker which was inspired by a segment on the television news program 20/20.

I must admit to having no enthusiasm whatsoever for watching this movie, it was mostly my desire to watch as many Blu Ray discs as possible that attracted me! This is certainly not a title to show off the hi def format although it does look good. I was expecting a cheesy 'chick flick' what I got was actually a very emotional, classy and fairly laid back treat which takes half an hour or so to get into as it is quite mellow. What is so involving is how much you care for the characters especially Will Smith who tries so very hard to make good. I don't mind admitting to shedding a tear or two! Definately worth the effort though if you're looking for action this is probably not for you!

Rated - 5 starsWorth watching

This is a movie made by a director who cant even speak english properly but boy what a good job hes done! Im not the biggest fan of Will Smith as a Hollywood actor but this movie is a step in the right direction for Mr Smith. His performance is not as naff as i thought it might have been. Its actually good bar some moments that remind me of the fresh prince. Anyway putting Will Smith aside, the movie does a great job of portraying the various hardships of a single working parent. The added factor is a job that doesnt pay but promises great things provided you do it right! This leads to homelessness and various methods to make ends meet for Will and son. The hope is that one day leads into the next and the challenge is not to become completely drenched in poverty. The movie also does a fantastic job of portraying 80s San Francisco so that you actually feel the city. However thats also probably because Wills character is always running and covers alot of ground. The director, being new to such a big set, was also proably keen to fully utilise it. Thandie Newton plays a short role as Wills wife and does a brilliant job! Infact if it wasnt so short im pretty sure that would be a best supporting actress oscar right there.

A film based on a true story and offers Will Smith more of a part to get his teeth into. Unlike his previous parts there are no women to patronise with his puppy dog smile and no pat on the back everytime he succeeds at something. In the Movie we are carefully led through the struggles of one man and his son and his battle to keep them together and study in a homeless environment, toward success on a white collar job and the struggles in between as well as the contentious and competitive environment of investment banking. The interesting point about this film is that it is Italian directedand unusually emotively cast. Some parts have the same impact as Robin Williams did in Patch Adams and cover some of the same controversial points. Based in the Eighties in San Fransisco it tells the accurate story of the time and even includes the real people being portrayed in the film playing themselves or in the case of the main Character limiting himself to a small walk on part right at the end of the Movie. Will Smith's Best film yet and not just a banker for the Box office. I would hope that viewers watch this for the story it tells and not the Actors within. Good screenplay and a few good documentaries included in the extras. Emotive and Honest HD.
